Phono board costs for NAIT 3/NACA5 substitutes?

Posted by: domfjbrown on 04 April 2003

I *might* possibly be in the not too distant future be laying my mitts on a NAIT 3... But I don't want to jinx it...

Either way, it has the straight through boards (no phono stage). HOw much are the phono cards for moving magnet (to be used with a NAD 533/Ortofon 530)?

Also, it's for a bedroom system, and I am using Audiolab 8000A and Rega Kytes right now. Can Cable Talk 3.1 be used as substitute NACA5? I'd get the correct NAIM plugs soldered on the amp ends of the leads...

Also, what year did NAIT 3 come out - will it need recapping yet?

Sorry about the probably dumbarsed questions btw...

The boards are around £90 although you can pick up 2nd hand boards on the internet for half that probably. Simply look for 522 boards (and they come in pairs).

Although it should work ok, I wouldn't use Cable Talk 3.1. It's warm and muddy in the bass with no resolution in the mid/treble by comparison to NACA5. Get a decent dealer to make you up a set.

Can't remember when the nait3 came out but it's been a while. If you get the serial number, it's easy to tell. The amp won't need recapping until it reacheds 10 years old.

this link takes you to NAIM history. It shows NAIT 3 in 1993.

But please don't think a 10 year old NAIT would need recapping. It might sound a bit better recapped but it certainly should not need recapping.

Most of the time if it was sent in for a check up it will just be cleaned and returned with no work needed. Now if you specify a recapp they seem willing to do it just the same.

My 1988 NAIT2 is still perfect. The separates are more likey to benefit from recapping but even then they are usually sounding good without it.
