NaimUniti Updates to Hi-Res
February 2010. Naim has released a significant update for the award-winning NaimUniti.
The update will be obtainable only by taking your player(s) to your Naim retailer. Owners should make an appointment to have the update applied, and the process should take less than half-an-hour. All the NaimUniti units shipped in February have included the latest code. This shows as Version 2.00.00 when checking the Uniti status screen.
The key upgrade is the support for 24-bit/96kHz (and 24/88.2) playback of WAV and FLAC files including fixed point 24- and 32-bit files as well as 32-bit floating point variants. Playback of files with a sampling rate above 48kHz is not suggested if using a wireless connection – it may work well but performance cannot be guaranteed.
An additional feature of the update is the enabling of the radio preset to work on any input, a feature requested by existing NaimUniti owners. The update also includes minor updates to improve performance and consistency of performance together with Unicode support giving greater support to Chinese and Cyrillic character sets. This can be a significant benefit when listening to Chinese, Russian, and other esoteric internet radio stations.

Hi Paul,
This is great news, thanks.
For the computer literate amongst us, is there any chance that the update can be made available for self-install? Perhaps with a dealer visit for those less confident?
This would be a big help and I'm sure be much appreciated by many Uniti owners.
Thanks,
John

I'm sure it would be much appreciated by my dealer in Italy: he is really not a "computer literate"...

Please could the update and instructions be made available for download?

As a new uniti owner THIS MONTH, I can happily confirm this as an end-user.
My FLAC and WAV 96khz files flow freely into the USB port.
What a machine.

Mr Stephenson,
Besides the support for hi-res file, does the NaimUniti update also contain bug fixes for existing features? If yes, then which ones?
Your posting says "The update also includes minor updates to improve performance and consistency of performance". Please can you elaborate?
For those NaimUniti users who do not have urgent need for Hi-Res, do you recommend to update?
Thanks.

These are the fixes that I have been waiting for:
1. Ability to pause, FF and RW UPNP streams from commonly installed UPNP servers (eg. EyeConnect)
2. Gapless playback via UPNP streams
Have either of these been addressed?

I would like the choice to be able to download and update the uniti myself. I am a software/hardware engineer in the IT industry so I am well versed in updating firmware on computer equipment. Is this a possibility???

It's a two-part update-the first part (via RS-232) is not failsafe to the end user (no provisions are made for recovery in case of interruption of the file transfer), whereas the second part (via TCP/IP) is.
By that logic, you can then understand why not providing the update to the end user is advised-if you screw it up, the unit must be shipped back to the factory to be physically re-flashed.

Thanks David - good explanation.
For a device with CD drive and USB port built-in, to design an update process using a serial port is an "interesting" choice...

That will be a risk that we will just have to take then, if we want to do the update ourselves!
Most firmware updates warn you that if there is a power failure during the update your device will no longer work. I now have quite a collection of devices which I have updated.
Taking my Uniti to a dealer is neither risk or cost free.

Speaking to my dealer this morning did not give me a warm fuzzy feeling at all. I have been involved in the IT industry for 20 years and would rather take my chances myself. I am more than used to using console (RS 232) cable. I have updated more components than the young man at the dealer has had hot dinners. But if Naim feels this is the update is better performed by a dealer then so be it. Just my 2 pence worth.

When is the uniti update expected to be available for customers in germany? My dealer knows nothing and says musicline does neither...

Hi,
I am a new owner of Uniti.
I would like to enquire about the Uniti's input & output sampling rate.
Thank you so much.
Regards.

AIUI the update can be downloaded via the Internet by dealers, so I suggest that you ask your dealer to look for it.
