More on the Beatles sets
Posted by: Steve Bull on 19 August 2009
Apologies if I missed this on one of the many other threads but according to an article at Diversevinyl's website:
Mono CD set has a cut-off date, orders need to be with EMI by 26th August (so presumably earlier at your music shop of choice)
Setero CD set 'will be available for some time after release date' which rather implies it may not be around for ever either. Or perhaps it's just a marketing ploy to get people to buy early. Or maybe I am just a cynic.
Most interesting of all 'Early indications are that EMI are planning similar corresponding Mono and Stereo sets on vinyl in early 2010. More news as it breaks.'

Steve, your post assumes a degree of knowledge that I, for one, don't have. Perhaps everyone else does, in which case I apologise.
What does anyone miss, if they miss the cut-off that you mention?
These CDs will sell around the world in their millions, so it's difficult to understand what may be going begging here.
Sorry if I'm being dumb!

The US retailers are saying the mono box is a "Numbered Set Limited to 10,000 Copies Worldwide." Amazon et. al. are still taking preorders, though you'd think that the 10K limit has already been reached.

Thanks for this tip Steve. This would be very cool if it happens.

I still can't make my mind up stereo or mono - there is quite a rant on Amazon in terms of a review.
Oh what to do

Has anyone had the opportunity to listen to either set yet? Is the quality significantly different from the first round of CD releases from some 20 years ago (of which I already own)? I already own two BC13 Blue Box sets and would be very interested in the vinyl releases should they come out. I could potentially be interested in the CD box set if it was significantly better than my original set of CD's.

There is copy protection on these discs.
Wow, that's the first I've heard of this; no ripping to an HDX?
In the past there have been cases of copy production for discs sold in Europe but not the US, but for the Beatles boxes it sounds like all production is the same.

Every copy protected disc I have, I have been able to import to itunes. Will this be diff with the Beatles then?
Posted on: 22 August 2009 by glevethan
Thanks for the reply Stu. The copy protection aspect is disappointing. I am not going to sweat too much over it - kids have been able to rip "copy protected" DVD's so I am sure that they will figure out a way around this one.

I am watching this with amazement.
I cannot understand a limited release of these discs, the immense cost, the use of additional compression on the stereo edition, the use of a form of copy protection that only allows for playing of the disc directly off the CD rather than storage on an HDX style machine.
I am quite a fan of the Beatles, but certainly I have no intenttion of wasting money and time getting these things.
The group was good, but not that good.
In fact I was weighing up whether to burn the blue compilation album [1967-70] to iTunes, and decided marginally against. The trnsfers are definitely not good, and the music does not overcome the issue of poor sonics, but with decent transfers, then the nostalgia would have been enough to swing it, but it seems somehow EMI are trying to elevate the Beatles onto some kind of pedestal in their policy.

In that case they will come - 10 GBP for an album is fair enough.
I hate the big boxed sets of things that were originally issued as single LP album releases ...
But as far as possible the mono versions for sure ...

What I vocalised when I read that was unpublishable even on the new style "rude Forum."
I shall have to resort to illegal means.
Only joking. I have too much music already ...
ATB from George
PS: Can you tell I want them [especially the earlier work] really!

Stu,
I've been checking over at the Steve Hoffman arena, where there are thousands and thousands of posts about the Beatles remasters, but only just today is the specter of copy protection being raised. I'm sure they'd love it if you would report directly, including an account of how you got hold of the goods.

What bothers me - which I agree is a money making scam pure and simple - is that they are ignoring the precedent established by the 2 Capitol box sets a couple of years ago
On those you got the US released beatles albums up to 1965 (up to and including the US Rubber Soul)in STEREO and MONO on the same disc
So why not the remasters with a stereo mix followed by the mono mix?
I would be tempted despite all this by a Mono vinyl set!!

Just had an email from Amazon telling me my pre-ordered Beatles CDs have been cancelled.
Puzzling!
Edit: thios looks like it's related to Amazon's (UK) Jersey supplier, Indigostarfish.

We regret to report that the release of the following items has been cancelled:
The Beatles "Revolver"
The Beatles "Magical Mystery Tour"
The Beatles "Abbey Road"
These items have now been cancelled from your order and we can confirm that you have not been charged for them.
We are no longer able to offer these items for sale. Our supplier has informed us that these items have been discontinued and are no longer available.

As it stands, I thought I'd like the Beatles and now that I've got every release of theirs, I've concluded that they're not that great. If you have the full amount of material released, the lesser known tracks use total cliches to rhyme and I reckon this extends to the popular stuff that everyone has heard of.
That isn't talented to me.
On top of that, all the songs are around 2 minutes long. What's all this about? I think it's funny how as the years have gone on, so have the lengths of tracks.
I wasn't around during the 60s and can't appreciate the context the Beatles came out in, so what is the big fuss??!

Well, you must be doing something wrong, because I've got a set of final production discs and they import into iTunes on my Mac and PC just fine. Also ripped onto my Sooloos Music server.
No issues at all.
Very happy with both sets.

From the Michael Fremer article:
"However, the press release also contained this sour note: “Finally, as is common with today’s music, overall limiting - to increase the volume level of the CD - has been used, but on the stereo versions only. However, it was unanimously agreed that because of the importance of The Beatles’ music, limiting would be used moderately, so as to retain the original dynamics of the recordings.” Who cares if it’s “common with today’s music”? Today’s music sounds mostly like over-compressed crap."
That will be the mono set for me then.....
Steve.
