Posted by: liam on 14 January 2004

has anyone out there had any problems with the cd5 and a pair of headphones, ie it hurts your ears after a little while.
my system is cd5, 72/140, fc2, creek obh11-se
headphone amp, senn hd600 headphones.
with my last cd player i never noticed my ears
hurting after a while, but with the cd5 it just gets to the point were i have to take them off and call it a day.
anyone help me out?

actually the volume has come down about a quarter on my headphine amp to try and make it more comfortable.
its only the cd player that i have changed, it was a roksan dp1/da1/ds4.
it just seems alot sharper which i know could be the whole naim thing being clearer, i have no probs with system through my speakers it sounds great.

I've got my CD5 hooked directly to a tube headphone amp and use Grado HP-2's. The setup sounds fantastic and I don't experience any problems other than not having enough time to listen to the music.

If anything the HD600's should be laid back. I'd try a different headphone amp?

Check out http://www.head-fi.org/ for more information about headphones and amps.

Liam, I have a very similar set up, I have a Roksan Caspian, Creek OBH21SE and sennheiser 590's and have no problems whatsoever with my ears.

I can listen for many hours without any signs of fatigue.

On my CD5 (which I've only had since Saturday) I've found that listening fatigue is far less than with my old Rega Planet Mk1 - the CD5 is much more listenable and refined. In the main system I have to use an ancient Technics tape deck as a headphone amp, but it's not massively worse than the Rega Ear I use in the bedroom system...

Something strange is afoot with your headphone rig, I reckon.

Tip: visit www.head-fi.org/forums, seek out a guy whose monicker is 'pinkfloyd' and enquire about a thing called an X-Feed. I've met Mike ('pinkfloyd') and he brought some of his small, inexpensive X-feed blocks over to my house, and you know, for twenty or thirty quid they really do take any 'harshness' or long term uncomfort out of headphone listening.

Worth looking into - it's an inexpensive and clever idea.
