Money Jungle

Finally found a nice Mono UK release of this classic album. What a line up.
Ellington is quite extraordinary his piano playing so modern yet still recognizably him. I also love Min g us on this especially on the title track where he creates an anxious troubled, angry feel, very disconcerting but exhilarating. Apparently he had a major fight with Roach and they never played together again.

Ornette Coleman- In Europe. Double LP of t he Ornette's first (?) European concert in Croydon of all places. Another nice find. Features the Izenson, Moffett, Coleman trio and sounds much better than the Golden Circle BlueNotes especially Izenson's bass playing. Urban myth has it the crowd barrac ked Or n ette but its clear from the record they were in awe and ecstatic. One fool shouts out "Now Play Cherokee", which Ornette then does with some blistering deconstruction. Fabulous, beautiful tone of Ornettes sax. A truly great record.

Any other tas ty fin ds jazz fans? I know there must be some of you out there! smile

Flight to Jordan

Had not heard of him but found a VG Blue Note (reissue) of this a few weeks ago, also got a Horace Silver Quartet "Finger Popping" (I think). Both are brilliant.

Classic album and the stories behind it's conception are hillarious. Apparently Roach and Mingus were at each others throats the whole time while the Duke walks in ans says 'gentlemen shall we play some music' (or words to that effect). Ellington was into his 60's at the time and you can just picture him quietly indulging their antics!

I think I read on the Bluenote forum that Money Jungle gets remastered / rereleased in July.
Although I would probably prefer that mono LP. I like this one alot myself.

Simon, Flight to Jordan is one of my favourites, a real underated gem, with the wonderful British/Jamaican trumpeter Dizzy Reece. His Cds on the Jasmine label (reissues of British hardbop classics) are tremendous. Unfortunately Ive never tracked down his Bluenote Lps.

Found a nice Thad Jones/mel Lewis United Artists original "The Jazz Orchestra" yesterday. Breathtaking Big Band music.
