mac help

Hi all,
At work I have pc's.
When receiving email with attachments I click and get the 'open - run - save' window. If I click open it will then display the attachment in a new window. When finished working with it I close the window and am back to the message where I started.
At home I have a mac.
When viewing the attachment It reloads the inbox window and displays the file in the inbox window. There is not enough space to view the file plus when finished I have to click inbox which makes me have to reload the message again to get back to where I was. I have tried right clicking on the attachment for options but only get 'copy'.
I have checked my preferences and looked up the problem in the help finder and web but cannot find any solutions.
I know its something stupidly simple -Help please?

In Mail attachments will be stored just below the from fields in the main body of the email, you will see A little triangle next to a paper clip, click the and either drag the attachment to the desktop or right click it and save as.
Its at least as simple as outlook so I am not sure what it is you are doing.

yes that paper clip at bottom of addresses, left triangle turns down and opens up all attachments, blue oval on right with "save" has a menu to save it to a desktop or I think you can navigate to another file.
I tend to put them on my desktop and file them on my own or trash them.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that due to my lack of computer knowledge at the time (and still) we have broadband and email addresses with Tiscali connected by router to 3 pc's and for the last 5 years always used the Tiscali server to access our mail as setting up outlook can only be done on 1 computer (I think) and would not let all users access the inbox and its history. This is why I still have not set up Mail on the mac.

No thats fine, but obviously you do need to set it up to work.
If you are accessing the email from Safari via the web then attachments can be downloaded by right clicking them. If you have a mighty mouse (An apple one with a small roller ball) you can turn on right click in the system preferences>mice/keyboard
Or you can press the ctrl button on the keyboard whilst clicking.
To set up mail. Launch it. If there are no accounts it will open to a set up screen. From tiscali you need:
Your email address
Your email password (Probably the one you use to get web email)
Your user name (usually the bit before the @)
Sometimes this is enough information for mail to get you up and running. If not you will also require the server settings from tiscalli:
Incoing mail server
Outgoing mail server
Does it require authentication.
It all seems very complicated but these companies usually have a simple help section will all this info on one page. Its a lot handier having mail do your mail!

OK a little more digging and I find this
Incoming mail (POP3) - pop.tiscali.co.uk
Outgoing mail (SMTP) - smtp.tiscali.co.uk
And you do not require authentication, all this info you will enter when asked on the mail set up screen.

Thanks for taking out time. I will give it a go later.
Regarding right clicking, I have a mighty mouse but when I right click I just get 'copy link'. I also tried ctrl click but still got 'copy link'.
tiscali mac compatibility issue?

Well if you are on the web then no there should not be an issue. However I do not use tiscali so cannot find out.

I'm nearly there. I have my inbox in mac mail now but no sent folder. It seems that although I entered smtp.tiscali.co.uk for Outgoing mail my mac says it cannot connect to the server for some reason - me again no doubt.

No email can be a right pain in the arse.
Go into preferences then accounts, at the bottom is Outgoing mail server click in here and then edit. In the next box in advanced it might have selected ssl, try turning it off, then close prefs then mail then relaunch. See if that works.

No, still no luck. Thanks for the advice
Just reading back your replies and I don't know if I made clear that my broadband provider at work is tiscali but at home where the mac is I have cable broadband supplied by virgin. When I connected the mac for the first time IT JUST WORKED.
Also just following the same route as I did with adding tiscali to mac mail I also added my other halfs' hotmail account which although seemed as there was going to be a problem there too, I received mail from hotmail with a link just to sign in and verify and all is well - IT JUST WORKED
About a month ago I also added skype to the mac and IT JUST WORKED and it has integrated into the mac menu as if it came as a ready application and makes good use of the built in camera and mic for video chat with pristine picture and sound. It costs me £3.39 inc vat per month and I can speak unlimited to all my relatives abroad.
So not to bother you so much I googled my problem and found that there are many like me that cannot get the settings right with tiscali to send email. The tiscali how to install page is not up to date with leopard which for a company of this size is embarrassing - So STUFF EM! although a nuisance I will set up a new account with hotmail, googlemail or someone that cares for choice.

Just to say that all is running well with hotmail and googlemail in mac mail. Really was a doddle to set up.
For the interest and maybe benefit for anyone out there using tiscali I am with them at work for 5-6 years. They are providing my broadband through a phone line and have all our email accounts with them. Due to no one having any decent know how in computers and really no time at all to research for anything better we have been making do it seems for what we thought was a normal service.
Looking back at the number of times we had to send important images and the amount of time it took while we really needed to be on our production stations we are banging our heads and also releif that there is something better and no doubt there are even better as just yesterday I tried to send a 17mb zipped folder and as usual it was just hanging, took an hour and hadn't got anywhere near sending so I cancelled and just thought why not try my new email account with googlemail and it took just 10-15minutes.

I think you need to check your Internet speed as it should be much faster than 10 - 15 mins. Do a Google search for Internet speed tests and see what it tells you.

Thanks for the tip.
I just checked my home speed which is with virgin media and it registers;
2040 kbps download speed
243 kbps upload speed
At work which is with tiscali registers;
240 kbps download speed
238 kbps upload speed
No wonder!

It is no wonder. Tiscali is braodband internet via france, (Seriously)
If you need something for business I recommend ukfsn.org
That being said you may have issues with your line at work, or if there are a number of users then obviously bandwidth will decrease.

I was hoping to keep all things apple, but looking on what I still have to spend to get itunes to the stereo - like a touch for a remote and a storage/backup/server device that would not require the imac constantly on then the £69 needed to purchase iwork09 I was hoping to save and put toward it.
Looking through other threads I am about to try neooffice which is free although if happy I will donate.
Just before I do TextEdit is compatible with word and has enough features for what I would need it for. Without downloading a complete suite of features I may never use is there any freeware just for a spreadsheet app that would talk with excel and is worth mentioning?
Also looking on the apple site I came across 'gimp' a free paint and draw app - any views?

While mulling over free and really wanting to keep all things apple I have come across an offer to buy iwork 09 reasonably cheap. In the sellers advert it states this;
Apple iWork '09 retail boxed single user.
Immaculate as new.
Please note the Apple SLA permits one-off transfer of the license (you own the right to use license and get the retail package if you win this bid as if you purchased from new at the store) and the install does not ask for any registration key.
Can anyone help verify if this is true?

Yea you will be fine. But its a very cheap product anyhow, consider looking in the apple store.
For my money I would get Microsoft office home addition for 90 quid. Compatible 100% with PC office and the industry standard. iWork is a bit of fluff in comparision, apart from keynote which is excellent.
Pages is overly complicated and gets you know where fast.
Numbers is frustratingly simple, graphs are especially painful, it includes titles in a graph if they are numbers (Such as years) and try as you might copying the graphs outside of iWork will fail.

Gimp is terrible. Photoshop Elements is excellent.
If photo management is more of an issue the new google picasa is free and uber fast. Or for 125 you get apples excellent Aperture which really shows you what is possible.
Other apps of awesomeness:
istats menu
Teleport (if you have two macs)
Plex (media server if your mac is connected to a TV)
Cyberduck (For ftp transfers)
Also check out www.macupdate.com for more software or www.versiontracker.com
download things try them out, don't worry its a mac. If you don't like it drag it to the trash and empty it.

Your DSL speed at your office is nothing to do with the fact that Tiscali is an Italian company (not French) as your DSL is most routed through BT lines for your "last mile" connectivity anyway.
However, your business should not be running on Domestic DSL service as typically businesses require QoS commitments and your company should talk to Tiscali (or another provider) about those options.
Cheers

Thanks garyi
Well I was just reading various reviews on neoofffice and you can't complain as it is free, but what put me off a little was that on starting the application it has to load up java which makes it sluggish which is also another app to install( I think). I couldn't understand the way the features were explained on the neooffice web page it made me come away thinking that it works more with third party apps within its own program such as imedia but I already have i life. Maybe I have misunderstood everything.
Anyhow this is why I am thinking about i work (can get a deal) as it integrates and compliments what I have already but as you say microsoft office IS the industry standard which always niggled in the back of my mind. Whatever the reviews say and however much better iwork is or isn't the fact is that excel and word are the standard. If I decide to go this route do you know if it integrates into the mac as iwork, or does it come along as its own program and cause a little difficulty in eg. attatching images from iphoto to a word or excel document?
Is it really that easy to uninstall programmes you don't like - no install/uninstall manager? Just drag and drop into trash? COOL!
Them apps look good and I have bookmarked them links.
Cheers

You can also get a copy of OpenOffice v 3.x for the Mac and I believe that is a native application.
Open Office
You might find this a bit faster.

In Greek/Italian there is a saying "una fatsa una ratsa" which means same face same race. If it has any real meaning then that would make it worse than a French service.
Thanks for raising the issue as I did not think of it. At the time I was a caveman in a computer age that had no place in my world until globalisation and minimum wage (not a bad thing) made it an overnight necessity as my main customer left me by taking their manufacturing needs overseas. I was then introduced to a world of email and less direct contact or face to face dealing. Tiscali happened to be who I stumbled on. I have just upgraded to business 2MB. Its the easiest option without all the migration polava although I will be looking at ukfsn if not satisfied. I believe that existing customers should not just drop their supplier at the first problem.
Still not happy that I couldn't set them up on Mail their support team is in another part of the world whereas today I spoke to my domain name support team in English in the UK at 10p min.
Cheers
