Homogenous Weeble

Posted by: droodzilla on 11 December 2007

Something for those of a mathematical bent:

gomboc

It's like a weeble but homogenous (i.e. same density all the way through, not weighted at the base). It's only recently been proven that such a homogenous self-righting solid exists.

Would be lovely to own one, but the current asking price is £600 minimum.

For the collector of pointless crap, I would concur.

Would it help if it had the word "naim" etched on it?

Come on, it's a homegenous weeble for frak's sake! What more could anyone ask for?

Drood thank you for pointing this out last week. It is really interesting and I would also buy one of the price were more recent. It is (IMHO) really clever and great that such a thing exists.

Thanks for the support Ian. I was starting to think I was "weird" for finding it so interesting.

Nice. I suppose homogeneous also means with no concave parts. Otherwise you can imagine parts sticking out and little holes being drilled that amount to the same effect as using weighted material.

The edges on the object don't appear to be essential, more a way to simplify production.

I love it. I've set my mind to carving myself one out of cheddar cheese.

Correct. More technically, this is the first known convex, homogenous solid with just two mechanical equilibria - one stable, and one unstable.
