Good driving music?
Posted by: Obsessed1 on 05 July 2006
I've got a seven hour drive on the horizon. Any suggestions for good discs to take in the car to help pass the time?
So far, I'm thinking along the lines of B.R.M.C., Hard-Fi, AC/DC - Back in Black, Catherine Wheel - Chrome, Goldfrapp, Franz Ferdinand. Possibly Pink Floyd - Echoes, although this may be too distracting for travelling at excessive speeds.
Suggestions?

Load up an ipod with loads of music, nothing too sombre, & put it on "shuffle" or random mode, & play it through the car hifi. The variety of music/rhythms/beats etc may help prevent tiredness, hopefully.

I think one has to be very careful in choosing music for driving as certain types of music causes my right foot to get heavier. I have noticed how different music causes me to speed up or slow down even within one track of a CD.
I often used to drive between Brighton and the Lake District (up to 12 hours on a bank holiday with delays at Birmigham)and I found that I could drive without any tiredness listening to wait for it....Nat King Cole (which I only play while driving on long journeys and never at home). Music to stimulate like hard rock has the opposite effect on me long term - I cancel it out and it makes me sleepy. In the short term it just makes me drive too fast and that increases tiredness too.
Focussed but relaxed is the best way to drive imo. Beware over-stimulation and too much caffeine, in the long term it does you no good imo.

As long as there's no speed cameras Sweet Home Alabama by Leonard Skynard is epic driving music ('scuse any spelling typos).

My favourite driving song concerns road safety
Well I'm not really worried about this,
But can some one please answer me this -
Apart from on commentary, where else on earth
Can you hear the word 'aplomb' being used?
I'm filling up at Rothersthorpe North
(Good girl has broken my heart).
She took off with a youth from Rothersthorpe South
Now she's keeping two chevrons apart.
Keeping two chevrons apart,
Yes she's keeping two chevrons apart.
They say "Plenty more fish"
I say "Amoco Cadiz"
She's keeping two chevrons apart.
Sunday markets? You'll find Abergele's the best.
In her medium-sized launch tethered off Biarritz
She's keeping two chevrons apart.
Oh in her medium-sized lauch tethered off Biarritz
She's keeping two chevrons,
Keeping two chevrons,
keeping two chevrons apart.

Golden Earing - Radar Love, possible the best driving song ever, but I would go with the iPod shuffle for the remaining six hours and fifty five minutes.

I had "Exile on Main Street" for company on early morning drive back from Lincolnshire at the weekend. That worked pretty well. ZZ Top generally works well as driving music for me too.

Excellent suggestions; keep them coming. I think I will load Radar Love onto the ipod before leaving. A little Stones also would be a good *intermission* Haven't heard the propellerheads, but will check them out, too.
Also, just discovered "Howl" by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. What a fantastic disc! Heart-felt R&R, with the occasional hint of gospel. Recording quality puts every Coldplay, Keane, [insert your favourite top 40 here] in the dust-bin. No kidding - it rivals "audiophile" recordings. Guitars are *right there*. Highest recommendation, regardless of your musical tastes.

Oh, BTW, ROTF. Do tell with the artist and title of your driving song?

It could only be one artist really.
The song is Keeping Two Chevrons Apart from Four Lads Who Shook The Wirral by Half Man, Half Bisuit.
The song mentions key motoring themes. No other song I know mentions Rothersthorpe in Northamptonshire, even though it has the first stretch of motorway (Rothersthorpe Services being J15a on the M1) to have chevrons mysteriously appear on it followed by a sign saying "Tiredness can kill - take a break" and is thus worthy of place in history - surely there have been few events more strange. On motorways, of course, drivers are advised to keep two chevrons apart so that they don't run into the back of one another when the obligatory Sunday driver swerves in front of them. There's a sign saying "Keep two chevrons apart" just after Rothersthorpe Services... The North amd South bits allude to the direction of approach.
BTW Abergele is between Colwyn Bay and Rhyl on the North Wales coast and a great place for a party unless you have a heart condition.
Keeping Two Chevrons Apart is from HMHB's Country and Western period.

Go motorin' on the A13
If you're looking for a thrill that's new
Take in Fords, Dartford Tunnel and the river too
Go motorin' on the A13
It starts down in Wapping

And rather near Basildon

Chalkwell, Prittlewell
Southend's the end
If you ever have to go to Shoeburyness
Take the A road, the okay road that's the best

Creedence did some songs that weren't so great for driving to, as well
On the highway, Thirty people lost their lives.
On the highway, Thirty people lost their lives.
Well, I had some ways to Holley, And my road, it took a right.
In the moonlight, See that Greyhound rollin' on.
In the moonlight, See that Greyhound rollin' on.
Flyin' through the crossroads, roads that ran into the Hound.
For the graveyard, Thirty boxes made of bone.
For the graveyard, Thirty boxes made of bone.
Mister Undertaker, Take this coffin from my home.
In the midnight, He'll be cryin' out a name.
In the midnight, He'll be cryin' out a name.
I'm standin' on the railroad, Waitin' for the Graveyard Train.
But they did some good driving songs too
Was Ridin' along side the highway, rollin' up the country side.
Thinkin' I'm the devil's heatwave, what you burn in your crazy mind?
Saw a slight distraction standin' by the road;
She was smilin' there, yellow in her hair;
Do you wanna, I was thinkin', would you care.
Sweet Hitch-a-Hiker,
We could make music at the Greasy King.
Sweet Hitch-a-Hiker,
Won't you ride on my fast machine?

And what about the Nervous Norvus' classic Transfusion
ZZZZZZOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMM
Tooling down the hightway doing 79
I'm a twin pipe papa and I'm feelin fine
Hey man dig that was that a red stop sign-
(scrreeech-BANG!!tinkle)
Transfusion transfusion
I'm just a solid mess of contusions
Never never never gonna speed again
Slip the blood to me Bud
I jump in my rod about a quarter to nine
I gotta make a date with that chick of mine
I cross the centre line man you gotta make time-
(scrreeech-BANG!!tinkle)
Transfusion transfusion
Oh man I got the cotton pickin convolutions
Never never never gonna speed again
Shoot the juice to me Bruce
My foot's on the throttle and it's made of lead
But I'm a fast ridding daddy with a real cool head
I'm gonna pass a truck on the hill ahead-
(scrreeech-BANG!!tinkle)
Transfusion transfusion
My red corpsuckles (sic) are in mass confusion
Never never never gonna speed again
Pass the crimson to me Jimson
I took a little drink and I'm feelin right
I can fly right over everything everything in sight
There's a slow poking cat I'm gonna pass him on the right-
(scrreeech-BANG!!tinkle)
Transfusion transfusion
I'm a real gone paleface and that's no illusion
I'ma never never never gonna speed again
Pass the claret to me Barrett
A rollin down the mountain on a rainy day
Oh when you see me coming better start to pray
I'ma cuttin up the road and I'm the boss all the way-
(scrreeech-BANG!!tinkle)
Transfusion transfusion
Oh doc pardon me for this crazy intrusion
I'm never never never gonna speed again
Pump the fluid in me Louie
I'm burning up the highway early this morn
I'm passing everybody oh nothing but corn
Man outa my way I don't drive with my horn-
(scrreeech-BANG!!tinkle)
Transfusion transfusion
Oh nurse I'm gonna make a new resolution
I'm never never never gonna speed again
Put a gallon in me Alan
Oh barnyard drivers are found in two classes
Line crowding hogs and speeding jackasses
So rememmber to slow down today
Hey daddy-o
Make that type O huh

Then of course there is road rage:
English Roundabout - XTC
People rushing round with no time to spare.
Im so dizzy,
Im neither here nor there.
In this traffic jam,
I just want to shout,
Let me off o this english roundabout
English roundabout
And all the the horns go beep! beep!
All the people follow like sheep,
Im full of light and sound,
Making my head go round, round.
Everyone is cursing under their breath,
Im a passenger,
I feel close to death,
Hopeless situation,
I have no doubt.
Stop the madness, english roundabout
English roundabout
And all the cars go brum! brum!
And in my ears I feel a hum,
The neons blind my eyes,
All those tempers rise, rise.
Cars and buses go,
Puffing out their smoke,
Roll my window down,
I begin to choke.
I have had enough,
I just want to get out.
Let me off o this english roundabout.
English roundabout.
Oh and this one:
Thursday - Understanding In A Car Crash
Splintered piece of glass falls in the seat, gets caught
Broken windows, open locks, reminders of the youth we lost
In trying so hard to look away from you
We followed white lines to the sunset
Crash my car everday the same way
Time to let this pass
(The time it takes, the time it takes to let go)
Time runs through our veins
(Starts and stops and starts and stops again)
We dont stand a chance in this threadbare time
(The time it takes, the time it takes to let go)
Time to let this pass
(The time it takes, the time it takes to let go)
Staring at the setting sun
No reason to come back again
The twilight world in blue and white
The needle and the damage done
I dont want to feel this way forever
A dead letter marked, return to sender
Broken watch you gave to me turns into a compass
Its two hands still point to the same time 12:03, our last goodbye
So push the seats back a little further
I can see the headlights coming
So push the seats back a little further
Roll the windows down and take a breath
I can see the headlights coming
They paint the world in red and broken glass
Time to let this pass
(The time it takes, the time it takes to let go)
Time runs through our veins
(Starts and stops and starts and stops again)
We dont stand a chance in this threadbare time
(The time it takes, the time it takes to let go)

(The time it takes, the time it takes to let go)
Staring at the setting sun
No reason to come back again
The twilight world in blue and white
The needle and the damage done
I dont want to feel this way forever
A red letter marked, return to sender
Spinning hubcaps set the tempo for the music of the broken window
Cameras on and the cameras click
We open up the lens and cant stop
Staring at the setting sun
No reason to come back again
The twilight world in blue and white
The needle and the damage done
I dont want to feel this way forever
The lights are on, and the cameras click
We open up the lens
(The broken glass)
Staring at the setting sun
(And its over)
No reason to come back again
(In a flash)
The twilight world in blue and white
(Understanding)
The needle and the damage done
(Ill never understand)
I dont want to feel this way forever
(Understanding, in a car crash)
A red letter marked, return to sender
(In a car crash)
In a crash (In a crash)
Maybe it would be better not to take that drive?

Dear Friends,
I am lucky to have only crashed a car once, and that involved no one else. I still cannot explain what went wrong, but that was in 1993, so details are foggy! I involved the Police, and made a statement, though that was the end of it.
BUT one day I was listening to a relay (in 1983) from Bayreuth in the days when I still enjoyed Wagner. I was driving with increasing speed, but did not realise it. It had started to rain, and I had put the wipers on. I still had not reacted to the changed road surface when I span the old Renault 12 round on a nasty bend, luckily hitting no one or anything solid. I stopped on the wrong side of the road facing where I was coming from. I have never listened to music of any sort in the car (when driving) since that time. I considered that a lucky escape and a valuable lesson.
I can't concentrate on anything else if the music is enthralling.
Fredrik

I see a turning wheel
On a dusty track
Caught in the void and empty space
In between there and back
And the paradise of going somewhere
Thats still so far away
Happy, boy you bet I am
Holding on to this smile for just as long as I can
Heaven
Its all bright in front
And its all dark behind
Living for the now thats in between the bridges
And the signs
And getting there is still a long long way to go
While the others dream
This is all I officially need to know
Happy, boy you bet I am
Holding on to this smile for just as long as I can
Heaven

Do you own a Ferrari?
Do you live in a wonderful place?
And the smile on your face
Is of joyful laughter, happy ever after
[Shirley Bassey:]
Yes, I own a Ferrari
Yes, my life is your dream
And I live in a wonderful place
And the smile on my face
Is not sycophantic
I'm just a true romantic
How about you?
What is so wrong
With a heart with a dream
A soul without hope
Is a terrible scene
Deep in the coldest and darkest of nights
I hang on to my dream
Keep it locked in my sights
What is so wrong
With a heart with a dream
A soul without hope
Is a terrible scene
Deep in the coldest and darkest of nights
I hang on to my dream
Keep it locked in my sights
