HDX iPad app

Posted by: oscarskeeper on 04 November 2010

Afternoon all

having just purchased a new HDX (which is fantastic!), I am dithering about which way to go on controlling it. I would like to use either an iPod or ipad. However, I note that the iPod app does not presently scaled to fit the ipad screen. Does anybody know when a version for the iPod will be available?

Furthermore, does anybody know whether a free upgrade will be available for people who have already purchased the nserve application for the iPod. I really do not want to pay £25 for it and then find I have to pay the same again for the HD version.

I'm also going to take this opportunity to provide a bit of customer feedback and join those who have suggested that £25 for the application is too much. Whilst as I say I am very happy with my purchase, given its price, one might well expect that some sort of touch remote was provided-the supplied remote is not really any use as if you are close enough to read the screen, you can use your hands! A non-branded iPod which only ran the application would be perfect. However, I suspect this is far from practical. It does however seem a bit cheeky to charge north of £4500 for something and then charge its owner another £25 for the software to control it. I appreciate that there is an argument saying that if it was included everyone would be paying for it, even those who did not use the iPod/iPod control method, but I do wonder how many of those are really out there.

Many thanks

I bet if you asked your dealer to discount the HDX £25 and in turn you offered buy one with cash/check, I am sure they would be amenable to that. Just a thought. That would be a minimal cash discount a dealer would probably be willing to extend.

I've always thought it was a cheek to charge 25 notes for the app, considering the price of the HDX. Especially when you come to move it on. You can always use a smartphone that supports Flash if you want it for free.
Tring is nice this time of year

Love the iPod Touch to control my HDX, don't use anything else...

I've tried the remote, looking at it on the telly, the DTC, the flash interface, the iPhone app and the same on the iPad. For me the iPad wins hands down. It's so convenient and easy to use. It scales up to x2 OK but is in need of a rework. For the time being it will do fine. Compared to the cost of the HDX the cost of the app is negligible. If paying for it offends, don't buy it. I suppose it is possible that a dealer might throw it in as a promotion or a gesture of good will - if you don't ask you don't get. Same with buying something like a car - ask for accessories to be thrown in but don't take it personally if you don't get them.

I don't believe price is the issue here, it is availability. Once it exists we can decide whether it is a worthwhile purchase for us individually.
The iPad app has been talked about for months but where is it?
Come on Naim give us a clue when it is to be released.
Christmas is coming and this app might fit very well in a number of stockings!

Christmas would be nice. The n-serve as is, is good enough on the iPad for the interim.

Having just installed the Sonos iPad app I hope Naim are having a look. This app is excellent in terms of intuitive use and giving fantastic search and information facilities.
It is worth reminding Naim that the Sonos is a free app and completely removes the need for their £300 controller.
I still feel fairly grumpy about Naim charging for the original HDX app - now they are wholeheartedly bringing out streamers, by the week it seems, I wonder how their new market will feel about that.

About as impressed as anyone who buys the Songbook Naim app for £29 (Songbook Mac is all but unusable IMHO.)

At least n-stream works.
