CDS1 - bargain...?
Posted by: jpk73 on 23 October 2001
Is 1400 a good price? I am now playing CDs with my CD3.5/Flat and am about to upgrade my whole system to something like 82/Snaxo/250s...
Thanks for any advice,
Jun

you speak wisely, but it is my understanding that one of the reasons why Naim offer the CDSII upgrade is so that they can strip out still-working transports from old decks.
Still, if the ring is worn out I would tend to avoid.
OTOH, if you want a CDS-II for £3K, then this sounds like a great way to get to it. Budget in another £100-ish for a full service of the CDPS. OK, it's not as good as an XPS, but it's good enough.
Jun,
does the seller have a digital camera?
Get them to take a pic of the centre of the transport and send it to you. Post it here, and wait for an instant critique. Of course, you could just send it to Naim & get an authoritative opinion.
Worries about the Nextel ring aside, that's either a very early player, or a very good price.
Should suit your proposed new system well.
BTW, you said the price was '1,400' but didn't specify what currency. I guess we're assuming pounds Sterling, or some currency with a lower unit value.
If it's in Euros I would start to wonder that the price was too low. I suppose you are being offered both boxes - the CDS head & the CDPS power supply?
cheers, Martin

What is the difference between CDPS and XPS like?

I have 2 friends with CDS1s, one of them has a nextel-ring with small openings, but "my" CDS is without openings. The price is 1400UKP, PSU included.
OK, now stop asking questions for a moment and write the man a cheque!! Lucky B......!

Search the forum for "CDPS or CD-PS or CDSPS or CDS-PS". It's all in there.
Although I've never done a side-by-side comparison, I can say that the CDSII's natural character seems to come through perfectly well with this PS. It has been described as somewhat softer in sound.

Thanks for the hint. I hope my CDS1 head-unit will play for some years... BTW: there is really nothing else to do than upgrading the head-unit to a CDS2 in case the nextel-ring is worn out?

Naim do have some spares, taken from still-working CDS-I which were upgraded to CDS-II.
Of course, these aren't new units, but they will be tested & working OK.
