MGM night at The Proms - 1 August

Who heard (& saw) the MGM night at last Saturdays Prom ???

The John Wilson Orchestra – John is the arranger and conductor. His score was as close as I have heard to the originals.
A full Big Band line up in the orchestra – WOW could those guys hit it !!
5 top class singers who were near perfect. Kim Criswell, Curtis Stigers & Seth MacFarlane were outstanding, real singers who could swing like the old guys. Thomas Allen although his magnificent self most of the time, unfortunatly struggled in places.

Only problem was the dear ol’ BEEB did not get it right. It was OK, but nothing special. TV sound (though Naim of course) was as good as R-3 (FM of course) Some of the vocal mic work was not right and although Kim Criswell can belt it better than most, she got buried a few times. The two piano’s were very low in the mix as was the bass section.

But despite the BEEB, the music was MAGIC

I recorded most of this on my SKYHD box but not watched it all, but certainly I would agree the orchestra were 'smack on' and the material great.

Not checked the sound at best volume (through my naim too) but first impressions were good. I was shocked to see Seth MacFarlane of Family Guy fame there! Enjoyed his singing and slips into Stewie in 'That's Entertainment'!

I felt the TV sound was noticably mediocre.
Auntie has decided that these days she doesn't need any in-house technical facilities (OBs, Studios, Post Production, etc).
Mark Thompson (DG) & the other executive corporate robots believe this can all be sourced on the open market.
Those facilities that haven't been sold off or shut down are slowly being wound down. Frown
