HDMI cable

Posted by: Occean on 04 January 2006

I have just purchased a Toshiba LCD panel – 27WL56 and am about to purchase a HDMI cable to connect to my Denon 2910.

This type of question has been asked a hundred times I am sure – but am I going to see any difference between various priced digital cables? OK I do understand a well built cable is a minimum but the difference between say £40, £80, £150 etc etc.

Has anyone had any experience or recommendations?

Actually yes! If the Toshiba panel is any good then you would notice a difference and quite a big one too. I was really surprised by this a few weeks ago. Usually we use Chord Co HDMI cable (not cheap) and the picture looks a certain way depending on the player (Naim DVD5) and screen (Pioneer 436XDE). Now on this one occasion the cable was in use elsewhere, so I grabbed a relatively inexpensive cable from a manufacturer who normally provides good quality for the money. I plugged it in and let it go. At first it looked a bit weird so I thought perhaps it just needed to settle down.

After 15 minutes during which I was talking to customers, the picture started to irritate me so much that I made a remark on how awful it was. The customers agreed so I begged their patience and grabbed the Chord cable (which had come free). Plugging it in the picutre immediately looked miles better. With the cheaper cable, the picture had looked over-egged, the colours were highly saturated, almost like the colour had been turned right up on the set. Movement had been jaggy and bitty. difficult to describe but it was quite irritating. The move to the Chord cable was a big step forward. Now the customer then pointed out that they had had the Chord cable at home and it had given similar results so they tried the Naim cable and it was even better. I haven't tried the Naim cable but that's obviously going to be different too.

I must admit, I was very surprised by this experience. Generally I'm not too good at noticing picture anomalies so to have the experience corroborated by the customers and to have this feedback about the Naim cable was very interesting.

No, but they do a component cable (RGB1) for video and a digital coax (DC1) for audio:

"The RGB1 is a very high quality coaxial video cable for YUV, RGB or RGBHV signals. Available in 3 lengths, 10m, 5m, and for 2m.

The DC1 is a very high quality coaxial digital interconnect"

There's some info on the US site here.

Click on "Interconnect Prices" then either "Digital Audio" or "Analog Video". There are is pricing for DC1, per 1m, and varying prices for the RGB1. UK prices will probably be slightly less after conversion.

I tried a three HDMI cables at differing levels between and Arcam DV79 and a Pioneer 504HDE together with a guy who manufactures hi-fi/av cables. From memory, Wireworld Starlight, Supra and a Chord one (can't remember which)

We spent about 3 hours watching various films and various scenes from within them. We couldn't see any differences at all to be honest. Now that may be my eyesight, but we honestly couldn't see any difference at all.

I am very much a believer in the value of quality cable, interconnects and main products so I was ready to spend the money on a more expensive one but just could't see a difference.

As with all of these things, there's no substitute for trying them yourself. Your eyesight might be better than mine! Smile

Ordered myself a Chord as my local dealer did not have anything below £100 except a single 3m QED cable and all I need is 1.5m

job done and thanks again
