Granddaddy - Sumday

Posted by: Minky on 07 July 2003

Gidday mates and mateesses. I just got to the end of the new Granddaddy album and pressed play again, so I must like it. There is definitely pleasure to be had here.

I must admit that I had never heard of these guys until the chatter started on this forum, so thanks. It's sad that music seems to take a very definite backseat to hi-fi round these parts.

Anyhoo, this is a very good album. First thought was "bugger - Radiohead USA" but it's actually more like well groomed Flaming lips meets Wilco which suits me down to the ground.

Now someone tell me about the Eels. My dealer has never heard of them.

I really liked Sumday till my 72 year old mother in law (who absolutley loves the Carpenters, Michael Crawford and the Kings singers) came to visit, heard it and pronounced that I must tape it for her Eek

I'm safe with the Eels though, she wasnt keen on Shootenanny, which isnt as good as Beautiful freak or Daisies of the Galaxy, but its a grower

Yup, my mother in law ruined Indigo Girls "Become you" in much the same way. Not only did she not HATE it, she liked it A LOT. Frown

Minky, try Grandaddy's "Under The Western Freeway" which is their best effort IMO.

I got both "UTWF" and "Software slump" for a fiver each last week and I prefer the latter (its playing as I type this)

Eels ya. I've got Shootewhatsit, bloody good. Just picked up Beautiful Freak for $15 from Real Groovy - gotta be happy with that.

Jay

Yeah...well it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Can this mean that we are in the same country ?

I am having trouble getting the Eels shootathingy because no one has ever heard of it (so thank god for this forum). Has it been released in NZ yet ?

I thought everyone on this forum lived in Wellington Big Grin

Island Bay my friend and Real Groovy had a stack of Shoot when it was released maybe 4 weeks or so ago.

Sometimes I wonder if I should put Colin Morris out to pasture and then I think of him wandering the streets with his lump and his bucket full of spare lumps and I just don't have the heart ..

your dealer has heard of Eels, I guess he just can't remember it. I've played it for him in the past.

"Beautiful Freak" is a must-buy. Daisies of the Galaxy also great.
