At last I have got my Bog Seats

Posted by: Steve Toy on 21 March 2002

I installed them this afternoon along with the rest of my kit that I have got safely back from a friend's house.

The system still needs to warm up and bed in again, but already I am noticing some fairly significant changes in the presentation.

Firstly, the noise floor is even lower - more air, space and blackness.

Vocals seem to have more presence and focus.

The bass, whilst still a little ripe, is more articulate and textured.

The soundstage is deeper and better projected.

There is greater emphasis on musical ebb and flow - timing if you will.

There is more overall detail, and the dynamics have lost some of that sense of restraint.

There is even more tune.

Moving from QS Ref. to Bog Seat version is as big a jump as going from Mana Phase Two to Phase Four, (imho) but it's different.

I didn't say "better," I just said "different."

These findings are subjective of course, and I may have more to add over the coming days as the system settles down.

Regards,

Steve.

I suppose another advantage is that bog seats have less surface to dust.

I'm wondering if the hole is too big for a Naim half-width case.
What's the size of the hole at its largest point?

PS What do you do with your standard shelves? Firewood?

Thank you for enlightening me, obviously I lead an empty life not knowing who Fonz is. Was Fonz some sort of early weenie boy.

Let us all hope that Stevens long wait is worth it. He has considerably more patience than me.

Mick to put this in a more British cultural context think of Steven as Private Pike and Vuk as Capt Mannering.

The reference is probably more to do with 'The Fonzs' recent visit to the toy household.

Ehhhhyyyy!

There are lots of stands on the market of varying size, construction, fabrication, maerials etc.

Quadspire has always been regarded as a rather ugly and unfortunately ineffectual stand, mainly purchased by people who did not have a care about appearance, hence usually those who lived by themselves.

About six months ago, Quadspire reacted to this image by

a) making the construction wobbly (innovative )

b) cutting a hole in each shelf to reduce resonance.

The sonic capabiities have improved, but it really is a bloody awful looking mess.

The term bog seat was coined because that is just what it looks like. The shelf is thin and cheap looking, supported by wobbly uprights and each shelf has a hole in it. Can you imagine a more foul looking device.

For once (and against my better judgement) I have to agree with Mr Parry in this case. The QS doesn't look quite so bad with lighter coloured shelves and silver uprights (as per TC's) or with glass shelves (a friend has his AV system on these) but with bog seats, dark wood and black uprights - Yuck!

The main problem with that setup is that the wine bottles aren't in arms reach! Is there a beer cooler out of the photo to one side by any chance?

Hi Mike!

Yes there is less surface to dust, and I get to see the Densen BEAT logo on the lids of of my amps through the holes. smile

The hole is not too big for a Hi-cap - I have already checked that one out hands-on.

As for "firewod," it was a tenner a shelf to make the swap. I have sent the unholed shelves back for recycling.

Hopefully someone else will now be able to take ownership of my old shelves, but with the holes cut into them and a fresh coat of black paint.

Regards,

Steve.

It's a bit late for that now.

(sense of restraint? Call TF!)

I suppose I do notch up a few REPs for that, but the Mana people are kind of Round Earth, aren't they? red face

Good to hear that you got the bog-seats at last. I'm still awaiting my tuning pick, but I'm not too fussed as an allen key does the job just as well IMHO.

I may end up getting two of my shelves 'en-bogged', but only if it's not going to take 3 months to do so. Perhaps I can arrange with my dealer to borrow a couple of shelves in the interim. Sadly, my preamp, TT and headphone amps are too short to span the gap, so it'll end up being a bit of a mixture...

As for the QS versus other stands thing (aesthetically speaking) QS certainly looks a heck of a lot nicer than Hutter or Mana, and at this point Lord God Vukleberry will undoubtedly post a picture of his Mana rack with Sam Fox on the P9... not that that will sway me (although she had a couple of good points... wink )

Surely Mick is the architypal Capt. Mainwaring figure? I see Vuk more as Warden Hodges.

You won't find yourself sans QS for more than a few hours.

You place your order for Bog Seats, wait a few months, then just swap them for your old shelves at your dealers when they finally turn up.

For those of you who think Stallion looks like Fonzey, you arent watching enough daytime tv. He's currently the thinking housewifes crumpet on Bargainhunt.

The Fonz would have said "sit on it !" Hence bog seat ...etc. etc...

I still can't get over Ron Howard ( Richie Cunningham ) being a well respected film director...

Yes, that was my apartment living room. My current listening space is an improvement, although I'm sure many will still not be impressed. I'm waiting for the window coverings to be installed, at which point I'll take some piccies and post them here on the forum.
