At last I have got my Bog Seats

Posted by: Steve Toy on 21 March 2002

I installed them this afternoon along with the rest of my kit that I have got safely back from a friend's house.

The system still needs to warm up and bed in again, but already I am noticing some fairly significant changes in the presentation.

Firstly, the noise floor is even lower - more air, space and blackness.

Vocals seem to have more presence and focus.

The bass, whilst still a little ripe, is more articulate and textured.

The soundstage is deeper and better projected.

There is greater emphasis on musical ebb and flow - timing if you will.

There is more overall detail, and the dynamics have lost some of that sense of restraint.

There is even more tune.

Moving from QS Ref. to Bog Seat version is as big a jump as going from Mana Phase Two to Phase Four, (imho) but it's different.

I didn't say "better," I just said "different."

These findings are subjective of course, and I may have more to add over the coming days as the system settles down.

Regards,

Steve.

According to the Dad's Army website Mrs Mainwaring -- often referred to, never seen -- "now spends her time in the home making unusual lamp-shades". I rest my case.

Now just who could Private Walker be?

Hi Mike BTW - We await your new system pics with bated breath.

Matthew, Vuk has been modelling himself on Mr Parry for some time.

I've noticed that too. Maybe Vuk and Mick are opposite faces of the same coin:

Good Parry, Bad Parry.

Good Parry goes on about standards,
Bad Parry goes on about anything and everything.

But Parry is nearly alway right.

One side of the coin says "The Parry on the other side is always right"

The other side of the coin says "The Parry on the other side is always wrong".

Which Parry is right, and which is wrong?

Quote Vuk,

"I am going to start modelling myself after you rather than Mick."

Errrr, thanks Vuk. I think that was meant as a compliment!

I think that as Ron Howard is now a top flight director then he must have been a bloody amazing actor as well. He gave no indication whatsoever of his hidden talents during his time in Happy Days!

Whatever happened to Henry Winkler? Between you & me, back then I thought his character was very cool.

Bob..... cool

Of the Happy Days cast, I think Ron Howard has had the best run since the series ended. He's directed some big movies like Apollo 13.

Anybody know what "The Fonz" is up to these days?

Heyyyyyy...

Stallion's intemperate outburst at the misuse of the forum leads me to beleive he is the Reverand T. Farthing who was, of course, equally obsessed with misuse of the Church Hall.

(Although that would make Steven Topy the Verger rather than the more appropriate Pike)

Stephen,

Thanks for the feedback - I am still on for a QS Ref, but I spent my pocket money on a EMU Audity 2000 instead.

Can you comment on the improvement from QS Std to QS Ref ? Is it the base + uprights + shelves together that make the improvement ?

Mr Tibbs,

Although there is an argument that Mainwaring's arch enemy Hodges should really be Mr Pig, given Hodges uncompromising hooligan attitude and general disdain for the girly-men attitude of the others, it has to be Vuk.

I was never terribly enthralled with QS standard, although it did make a CDX sound better than a CD5/Flatcap 2 - unlike the Optimum stand I was using until August of last year.

I bought the QS Ref (without holes) on the strength of a very convincing A/B dem with the standard version, where the CD player was moved across from one to the other.

The QS Ref. was a no-brainer, giving improvements in all areas, although it is more unforgiving of hierarchical imbalances within the system than the standard Q4 version.

The differences are mainly down to the additional "runt" shelf, different rods, the lesser tightening thereof in conjunction with the decoupling rings, extra decoupling for the top shelf, and different use of lacquer for the shelves to further reduce resonances.

If the standard version gets 5 points for musicality, then the QS Ref. without holes scores 10.

The Bog Seat version scores 14.

IMHO.

Like we don't UNDERSTAND the concept of a rhetorical question even when "we" speak English as a first language, and are qualified to teach it!!!!

If QS Reference did anything properly, you wouldn't have spent an outrageous amount of money to carve a hole in slabs of wood (MDF). Either way, you've got to confess either to being a girlie man (unable to handle a power tool), a stand sheep or a pathetic sissie who's afraid of hi-fi demons.

I didn't spend an outrageous sum of money to get my bog seats - the swap for the old shelves cost me £50, bringing the total to £630.

As for the DIY thing, I wanted the job done properly.

I also said that the new shelves were the equivalent of going from Mana Phase Two to Phase Four.

Now Vuk, how much is a Mana amp rack at Phase Four?

My turn with the rhetorical question...

Steve.
