Rough justice?

I’m surprised this appears to have gone unnoticed.
Jill Dando's murder
This man was found not guilty of the murder of Jill Dando after a retrial.
“A jury of eight women and four men unanimously cleared George.”
His claim for compensation for lost earnings etc for spending 8 years in jail after being wrongly convicted because
“the Ministry of Justice rejected his request after ruling he has not proven his innocence.”
I’m completely neutral here. In fact I could believe this is an unpleasant disturbed man but surely we don’t usually need to prove our innocence.
