Is it possible to domesticate PMS Briks?
Posted by: Jens on 30 June 2003
Hi Folks,
I'd like some infor on PMS Briks. When did these first come out? Is it possible to turn them into DMS by the addition of an offboard X-over. I know that later model Briks with the X-over in the stands could be either PMS or DMS depending on how you connected the wires, but I'm not sure if this was always the case.
Cheers, Jens

Jens:
Get a little Brik history on the PinkFishMedia site "http://www.pinkfishmedia.co.uk/"
Later model Briks were all PMS with an outboard crossover in the stands if you didn't want to go active. Earlier models had internal crossovers for the DMS and no crossover for the PMS.
Falcon Acoustics in the UK still sells crossovers if you want one. They used to make them for Linn.
There's another site for Linn/Brik history that has a little more info than PinkFish but I can't remember the URL.

Anything is possible.
But there are many variables. To use the 'Falcon' crossovers you need to have a wire to each individual drive unit, each crossover board drives three units and you use two crossover boards per speaker. This is easy with the speakers equipped with 4mm sockets, but will be more complex with the earlier ones fitted with XLRs.
The later 'in stand' crossover boards are compatible with all PMS Briks, subject to suitable cabling, but are not available cheaply from Falcon.
Do you have a specific pair of PMS Briks in mind?

Hi Folks,
Thanks for the input. I'm not sure about the age of these Briks. I haven't seen them, except for a shot of the front. I'm attaching the piccie. Anyone want to guess their age? Do you like the fancy castors instead of the stand? The Mana crew will have a fit.
The vendor claims that he has an original X-over for them, so perhaps they are from post 1987 which can be readily converted from active to passive and vice versa IIRC. I've sent a piccie of Martin's Brik bottom to help him work out what he has, and am still awaiting reply. Unlike the UK, Briks don't come up very often in Australia, and so if one turns up even on the other side of the country it's worth checking out.
Cheers, Jens

Jens:
Try to get the serial number off of the back. That should help you narrow down the year they were made. If the seller has external crossovers he should also have the original stands. As Mark Russell tells you in the previous post they are mandatory if you don't want bass bloom.
They do look a bit knackered, I don't think you should pay more than $500 USD for them and perhaps a bit less. Probably better to pay more for a better set though. A pair of Briks in the US in good condition goes for between $1,000 and $1,200 USD. In the UK you can get them for around 500 to 600 Pounds.

By the way Jens, here's a thread with a photo of the inside bottom cavity of a brik with the double Falcon crossovers. A bit of work.

Hi Mark and Arthur,
Thanks for your feedback. So the newer Briks came with veneer rather than that drab looking cork-board? I've seen black ones from 1989 looking much smarter than these, but didn't realize that the brown ones were also veneered later on. Anyone got any pictures of newer teak or walnut Briks?
These do look a bit bashed around don't they? Ontop of that the asking price is a whopping A$4K. I can certainly wait around for another pair because I have some very nice ES22s to listen to in the meantime.
Anyone in Australia wanting to rid themselves of some post 1987 Briks?
Cheers,
Jens

This is my pair of 1986ish Briks, crossovers in the base, 8 4mm sockets, taken during soldering operations.
As you can see, frontal veneer in evidence.

Paul,
Thanks for posting the piccie. The newer veneered versions look heaps nicer don't they? I think I'll wait for one of those to come along-much easier on the domestic harmony me thinks. With your 1986 version is it possible to go from PMS to DMS fairly easily (ie. as with later models)?
Patrick- A$2K? Try 4K-about UK1600 and climbing!
Cheers, Jens

Yup, briks with chipboard fronts are a very early pair.
There is a revision list somewhere on the Pink Fish Media site (the site, not the forum). I think these are pre-1982.
cheers, Martin
