Click

Posted by: Larry on 26 May 2002

I've been living with my system happily enough without worrying too much about the rat's nest of cables under the stand, the stand itself, (Sound Org. 5 shelf) or any of the other matters that can drive us nuts.
But...
Equipment: 72/Hicap/180/SBL
LP12/Lingo/Old Sony ES cd player.
I leave the Naim stuff powered up at all times through a 5 socket computer grade mains block. Query is: When the vacuum cleaner is switched on or off, (any socket on the same floor) a small click is heard through the speakers. Now, I know a dedicated spur can be of help because I installed one at previous house, but that is not an option at the moment. Is there anything else that I can do in the meantime, other than not vac up!

Thanks!
Perhaps I should have asked "which is better, Mana or Fraim"?u

I had a lovely walk there once.

Anyway; back to the real world. (Bugger!)

I'd say Fraim, but it's really a matter of personal taste.

You need to listen to both. Tricky. Just the CD player on each support will tell you what you need to know.

Have you tried another vacuum cleaner?

Larry,

Never tried Mana, too pug ugly, but Fraim was a significant improvement over SO.

I have a couple of dedicated spurs installed and still get clicks from a shredder (office and listening room combined) and some low voltage lights in the next room.

Regards,

Willy.

hi larry,

i get a sort of electrical buzz coming from my stereo whenever i switch of my reading light which is unfortunately on the same ciruit as my naim-amps. hmm. i do not like it. i can not change it either. what do i do? i switch of my 180, wait for the plop of the amps, than switch off the light. than maybe turn on the 180 again. bit complicated but it works. i have no problems with my vacuum-cleaner - my wife hoovers. hahahahahahahah. no, we share this work. hey, besides: i do the ironing always myself since my wife refuses to iron shirts. ooooh. BUT. ironing is so much more fun while listening to my system which is not all affected by switching on my iron.

i might add that at least in germany it is predominant opinion amongst naim-dealers not to put anything between amps and plug. they say it hinders the free flow of power. i do not doubt them. so maybe using one of these filters might free you from clicks and noises but also means a downgrade in sound??? only maybe.

hi allan,

i am just building a new house. all i can tell you is that a dedicated spur is the last thing i am thinking of, though i would love to have one. simply because you need the money elsewhere. wood floor for example. easy-clean basins. and so on and on. :-) it's not easy being a hifi-freak.

nevertheless i might give it a try with the thing you're mentioning. that is, if i can get hold of it in germany. i will let you know how it works.

Larry here again, Since my last post regarding the vacuum cleaner, I have been living in an electrically quiet but ever increasingly dusty environment.!
Just as I was settling down in my chair tonight to watch TV (Sorry) I heard a series of plops?, both speakers. Well I've switched every bloody item on and off in the house to re-create it but unsuccesfully.
10 minutes ago, same again, but this time the cause was standing in front of me. Family member No. 3 setting up her new mobile phone and ringing out.
This obviously has not got anything to do with the mains. Can anyone help?
I wasn smile but now I am getting e confused

Larry

could it be your refrigerator switching on and off? That compressor startup can sometimes be a real spike. IIRC there's usually a cap on the motor to damp this out - could it be that yours is shagged?

Thorsten,

if you're still building your house then the additional cost of installing one more cable run from the fuse box to your lounge is really quite negligible.

If you have to install one later, then you have *much* more expense, lots of hassle and mess, might have to re-decorate the whole room.

Sieze the moment!

cheers, Martin
