Help pls with Dvi/HDMI output to Panasonic TX32LXD60

Posted by: Avalin on 10 November 2006

Have just bought a Panasonic TX32LXD60 LCD TV and conected up the DVD5. Absolutely no problem wih BNC component connections and it gives a very good picture too, but the HDMI coneection to TV using a QED Dvi/HDMI connector on back of DVD5 is causing e problems.

Have been through the DVD5 set up menu and switched Dvi "on" and the same on the TV, but when you select the HDMI input on the TV, the picture from the DVD5 is there momentarily (and v g too) bfore disappearing and then continuing to flash on and off with a long time delay. If you switch back to component video input on TV, picture is fine. It's just the HDMI input that is not stable, sometimes there is decomposition of picture on the " flashing" HDMI picture.

Anyone any ideas?

Have already tried turning both devides off and then on and resetting but that has had no effect. Have tried unplugging BCA leads-no effect. Ther is no scart connected.

Could it be a poor conection at DVi /HDMI cable connection? HDMI cable is only 1m long but is the one which came with Sky HD box ie not Chord.

Help

Geoff

May just stay with BCA but ...

my very first advice to you would be to use another hdmi cable. my brother had this problem too, which appeared to be caused by a deffective (although new) cable.

Thanks, I had had that thought too, but alas my chord cable is somewhere else. I will take this cable back with me and plug it between the SkyHD box and the TV there and see if the problem replicates.

Sounds a bit strange that.

I've got the Panasonic TX32LXD52, the predecesor to the TX32LXD60 and have this hooked up with a 8m HDMI cable with no problems.

On mine, the TV regards the componant and HDMI as the same interface type and I need to switch from one to the other.

Actually, think your TV has 2 HDMI, have you tried it in both and removed the BNC's while using it ?

Thanks for the suggestions.

Cable is only 1m. Have tried it in both the HDMI sockets on back of TV, no difference. Have also unplugged BNC connections, no difference. On HDMI picture flashes-on, then disappears etc

Firmware is exactly as AV@Naim suggested.

Will e-mail s/no as requested.

Thnx.

Hi Geoff,

I `ve got a Pioneer and had a DVD5, so maybe my answer won`t help you.

Do you have a HDMI-setup in your Panasonic?
On mine I`ve got five option in the setup:
-auto
-RGB
-RGB expand
-YPbPr 4:4:4 (8-bit)
-YPbPr 4.2.2 (10-bit)

Via DVI (DVI to HDMI) only RGB (RGB expand?) is possible. So if your TV has problems with the auto(matical) recognition, set it to RGB (RGB expand?) and try again.

5 meters seem to be a maximum, although the official hdmi website claims that 15 meters are ok. (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#Distance_limitations see also http://www.hdmi.org)

Still, in 2006, this seems to be the preferred connection that most custom integrators are using.

If you change software on source or destination device, or, swap the device for a newer model, it will continue to function as from day one, without the voodoo and headaches that HDMI seems to wreak even between HDMI-enabled devices from the SAME manufacturer.

Length is also less of an issue with analog component connections, which is not insignificant when considering a projector.

HDMI doesn't specify a max length in their spec, but can be expected to go to 10 meters and possibly longer lengths without issues. The max length possible will drop as the resolution goes up. Max length can also vary with different player>cable>display combinations.

Reason I ask is I'm thinking of upgrading our dvd player (sticking with Rotel) to the RDV-1092 which does 1080P via hdmi into our Sony Bravia 50" 3-LCD rear proj telly.....the player also does up-scalling, which our current RDV-1060 doesn't - it only does 576P via component feed at present.

Also, sometime in the future, we're likely to purchase a PS3, giving us an HD-DVD player too, although it's very unlikely I'll replace our current dvd's with HD ones!! But it'll be located on the rack due to the short length of optical digital cable and can use the same hdmi as the dvd player......might even feed them both into the RSX-1067 receiver....

Due to the layout of our Den (see pics in profile) I need a long cable to run behind the walls.....

Cheers,
Ali

Hello Neil,

just had a look at the specs and it does 1080i and 720p, to be honest I thought it did 1080p but that's on the latest model.....I picked this up ealier in the year for £950 so can't complain!!

Model is - Sony KDFE50A12U.

1080i or 720p would give better results than the current 576p/i, the freeview picture's pretty cack, but it's mainly used for dvd'd up in our wee home cinema Den......

Ali

You're missing the point of Neil's question.

Just looked at your screen's spec

Sony's spec page

Your screen has a resolution of 1280 columns x 720 lines.

Regardless of how many lines you send it, it can only show you 720 lines - it displays 720P pixel for pixel in native resolution.
If you feed it 576i it de-interlaces and upscales.
If you feed it 1080i it downscales to 720 whilst deinterlacing.

1080i may look as good as 720P IF the scaler in the set is good, but it can't look better as your set can't show all 1080 lines.

Incidentally, there's stuff on the product info about this being a 2.7 megapixel screen - this is an intersting blag....

They're referring to the total number of red green and blue pixels - 1280 x 720 x 3 = 2764800

In real world terms, 1 pixel of image is made up of the combined visual output of one red, one green and one blue pixel.

Interesting Smile

Anyway, true 1080 line screens are only just coming to market, and you certainly won't get one with that screen size for similar money to the set you have, as long as you're happy with the price/performance equation then cool Cool

Mike,

you are quite right, please excuse my ignorance....

In fact - cheers, you might have just saved us about a grand!!

Think we'll stick with the current dvd/receiver set up and use the hdmi on the PS3 when it comes, so I'll still need to run that cable behind the walls, but at least I know 15m isn't going to be a problem.....

As for the performance/price equation I guess we are happy, well, I could always spend more than could be agreed on, if you know what I mean, but hey, I can't compain seeing as I've managed to get an agreement on our Naim system for next year.......and I almost fell of my chair when gorgeous other half said - "I guess we'll be going for the CDX2 thingy then...."

This was after demo'ing CD5x with/without power supplies and then a CDX2 into 112x/150x then 202/200......so we've decided on CDX2/202/200/NAPSC into N805S's, for sometime in the new year......can't wait!!

Cheers,
Ali

Getting back to the original post, I am pleased to report that following a firmware upgrade received from Naim, full service has been resumed.

The HDMi connection works fine now. I tried swapping the Sky 1m HDMI cable for a Chord one, but it made no difference whatever.

BTW BNC Componenet runs HDMi very, very close in my eyes.

So, if anyone else has similar problems ask your dealer or Naim, immediate response from them after my post and very good support, too.
