Old or New Hi-cap
Posted by: Colin Ackerman on 09 June 2003
Hi
As a first upgrade to my 202/200 I plan to fit a new NAPSC, later adding a Hi-cap. Are all Hi-caps the same or has the unit been upgraded over the years. Will a second hand cap sound as good as a new unit, any advice on what to look for.

All Hicaps, even chrome bumpers ones sound the same after they have been recapped. Naim told me that. There are differences but it is the main amp and source that really effect the sound.
So buy yourself a totally shagged out Hicap for about £250.00 and get Naim to service it. You will then have one which is as good as the latest model for half the price.
I have done that twice.

Mick

Colin,
There was a transformer change in the early nineties when their old supplier went out of business. The change happened a few years after the introduction of the olive casing. Old ones apparently sound a bit 'warmer', later ones a little more 'dynamic'. Same applies to the power amps etc etc.
Hope this helps,
Stephen.

I moved from a recently serviced chrome-bumper to olive HiCap and can confirm Stevo's comment.

Hi. Thank you for the advice, how much does a service on a Hi-cap cost Mick.
Is there any way of knowing which olive case models have the upgraded transformer. I would like 'dynamic' rather than 'warm'.

Allow about £150.00 inc postage. Send it yourself it is much cheaper than going through a dealer.

Colin,
The change was some time around 1992/3/4 I think, but Naim may be able to tell you exactly.
Having said that I'd expect you'd be more than happy with either of them. You could open the thing up to check the transformer inside, but having a listen is a lot more important.....
Hope this helps,
Stephen.

Hi
Looks like its going tobe a second hand Hi-cap and service at Naim. The after care at Naim seems excellent.
