Portable compressed air tank in UK?
Posted by: Willy on 06 April 2008
Looking for something like this:
http://homerepair.about.com/od/toolsmaterialsyouneed/ss/airtank.htm
but in the UK.
Idea is to charge it up off a compressor in the garage and then use it to power an airbrush in the house.
I have of course googled the crap out of it but to no avail. Anyone any ideas?

Check out some of the model websites. A few years ago there was a do it your self compressor/tank unit. The tank was using a fire extinguisher body the compressor from a fridge.

Why not use flexible pneumatic tubing.

what about approaching a dive shop, procure an expired dive tank. you can get them filled with plain air to a lesser capacity for the purpose you require.

If by expired you mean no longer fit for the purpose, air tanks for SCUBA diving which are no longer fit for the purpose are cut up to prevent further use.
The last tank explosion I am aware of,
which was due to it being used past it's time,
killed two people & injured many more.
Probably best to use a tank which is up to the job?

Have you considered using a tractor wheel

I already have a compressor in the garage and I guess running a tube from there would be an option. Trouble is it's for Mrs Willy and I can't imagine her rolling out said tube to do a spot of work. Likewise, big girl as she is, I can't imagine her rolling a tractor wheel into the house. Heck that's even uglier than Briks (which are now boxed up in the garage beside the compressor). The portable tank seemed an ideal solution, just the difficulty of finding such an item in the UK. Sometimes living on a small island off the coast of a slightly less small island is a real pain.

Expired dive cylinder doesn't mean no longer fit for the purpose, it means the certified sticker is no longer valid.
Dive cylinders need to be visually inspected every 2 1/2 years and hydraulically tested every 5 years. If it doesn't have the appropriate sticker, the dive shop will not fill it.
If the out of date cylinder which exploded and killed someone was being filled by a business, the owner would be in jail. That's if he wasn't killed in the explosion.
You could use a dive cylinder for the purpose of airbrushing, but you will need fittings, valve, pressure gauge and hoses and probably find that it will be expensive.

It does mean not fit for the purpose, if the tank has failed its inspection, which is what I was thinking of when Rico suggested "procure an expired dive tank".
This SCUBA tank explosion killed the dive shop operator, whereas this one killed a dive shop employee & injured three customers.
Only an idiot would use or suggest use of a pressurised container not fit for the purpose IMO.

They've been making these for years - the old 70's ones were a nicer design - ebay maybe?
