NAC72 tape monitor?

Posted by: mystik on 25 January 2003

I have a headphone amp that I'm trying to use with my 3.5 through my nac72. The amp has 2 tape inputs and a little switch that says 'mon' that I'm guessing is tape monitor. I've got the 3.5 plugged into the tuner input on the amp and I've tried the 'mon' switch with the headphone amp plugged into tape 1 and tape 2 of the nac72. What am I doing wrong?????

Sorry, is there something missing from this question? Or, are you experiencing, like me, until I thought a little, a total lack of noise from your head amp irrespective of switch positions.

If this is the case, the easiest and quickest solution is to obtain a Din to four phono lead, identify the two output leads and connect them to the two phono inputs on the head-amp.

The Tape monitor switch has two positions: 'monitor' position allows you to listen to what is being recorded on to a three headed tape deck, 'mute' cuts the signal to the speakers.

I hope that this is of use and I haven't got you totally misread your problem.

Which output do I use on the NAC72 to connect to the head amp using the tape monitor switch? Tape 1 or Tape 2?

The only workaround currently is to keep unplugging my CD player and connect it directly to the head amp.

Mystik, we need more information.

Let's think through what you are trying to do.
You've got your 3.5 plugged into the tuner input. No problem.
You've got a headphone amp plugged into a tape input. I don't see what this is intended to do. That input/output is designed to output whatever the preamp selector switch is set at to a tape deck and, when the recording head is engaged OR the tape deck playback head is engaged in the tape deck to send that signal back to the preamp. When you are recording, the monitor switch on the 72 switches the signal you hear from the speakers from the source to what the preamp is receiving from the tape deck.

I don't see how you can fit a headphone amp in and hear it via the 72. It does seem like you could use the 2 rca connectors that are outputting the signal from the 72 as an input to the headphone amp and hook up a pair of headphones to the headphone amp. but why would the headphone amp be sending anything to the preamp? I'm unclear here. If it has two output rca's and those are connected to the din/4rca connector used to send a signal to/from a tape deck then I can see how that would work. Are you sure you've got the right connectors connected to the right cables? Connecting them wrong would mean that you hear nothing, either with headphones or via the 72.

Mystik,

CD to the tuner input would be fine. Switch the 72 to this (so the sound is coming out of the speakers).

Plug the headphone amp into either Tape input using a *FOUR* phono cable. Try the phono plugs in turn until you get sound from both channels.

You may also be able to switch the monitor switch to either Mon or Mute to mute the speakers whilst leaving the headphones working.

cheers, Martin

sorry if I've been confusing people Frown

All I want to do is listen using headphones without needed to unplug my cd3.5 from my nac72 and connect it direct to the headphone amp.

I think Martin has hit the nail on the head with the '4 phono' lead suggestion. I'll try it tonight.

Cheers guys.
