HDX/DAC/555PS

Posted by: gary1 (US) on 16 March 2010

This weekend I picked up my Naim DAC from PM. JS lent me a digital cable, as the RCA-BNC DC1 had not yet come in.

What can I say, the DAC really transformed the music. What I first noticed was how much more air and space was present between the musicians, with them moving forward in the sound stage and adding more depth between them. There was a real three dimensional experience which could easily be pinpointed, which while I noticed before the DAC, you just can't miss at this point.

As always the quality of the recording makes a big difference, but it was clear that the music had much more emotion and I heard things in the recording that either were sutile before or I missed entirely.

Tord Gustavsen's recording "The Ground" was amazing and really showed the strength of the stuff done at ECM as was The album "X" by the xx, and Cowboy Junkies "Trinity Sessions." However, Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah was just hauntingly beautiful.

Yes, 24/96 was another league altogether, but with there still relatively little of the stuff around I'm just amazed what you can hear on a standard 16 bit ripped file.

Definitely worth the wait.

So garyi, what were you feeding with the output from your hdx/dac/555? I had a quick browse through your profile but found no clues. I wonder what a supernait of something of that ilk would make of such a high quality feed, would it choke or sing?

Roy,

SN/FC2x--> sings!

Presumably the 555PS is attached to the DAC. Is there any merit in using another PS to power the HDX as well?

Nope

Thanks for the concise reply. Would you care to expand on why not, please?

The parts of the HDX that are powered (analog section) when connected to a 555ps are not used when the digital out of the HDX is used.

It would be like buying a super expensive and high quality vitamin supplement to benefit your appendix, I suppose.

The outboard ps also supplies the DAC circuit includung the hardware clock portion of the HDX which in this case is also not being used when connected to an outboard DAC. I really don't want to perpetuate the idea that XPS and 555ps are analog supplies. That's a small portion of what they do. The outboard supplies don't power anything related to the DIG out. If you don't need the front panel display or IR remote function, you can pull the burndy plug all together and still have a functioning streamer.

Is it worth putting a Powerline on the HDX as well as the 555PS?

If I could get out of the habit of never using ten words when a hundred will do, my impressions would boil down to what you said above, nearly to the word. It’s been a remarkable month here. My happy but jaded world of music been turned upside down in the nicest possible way.

Round earth qualities being celebrated on the Naim forum. Who'd have thought. What next? Speakers designed for use away from walls.....oh, wait a minute. Big Grin

Funny old world, flat or round.

Yes, powerlines on everything--> unfortunately, they do make a substantial difference.

Allen to each his own. I've said before if the digital out on the NS01 was equivalent to the HDX and the DAC was available at the time I'd have gone with the NS01.

Having said that the source is very important. The rips from the HDX (16 bit) have been the best source I've heard, so even with the NS01 while a price difference no doubt, you still IMO need to spend some money for the source and a PC/Mac hasn't cut it yet as far as I'm concerned.

Separate, external boxed DACs will be the next turnaround.....Oh, wait a minute..! Winker

I've been told that it is, but I haven't heard it, so I wouldn't know.

Hi Gary,

just to get it right, do you hear any difference between hdx or ns01 feeding dac plus psu?

Georg,

I've never heard the NS01, I'm only stating what Naim has said.
