Help with Ipod photo
Posted by: Bas V on 12 March 2006
Hi!
I just acquired an Ipod photo 20G. It's a great machine and sounds pretty good on the move!
Now it should be able to display the covers from cd's, but I don't get any. All the music I put on it is from original cd's and the Ipod recognises al of them. I just don't get any pictures, not on Itunes and not on the Ipod. I have all the recent updates, so that can't be the problem. Anybody knows what's going wrong?
Regards!

I'm afraid noting is 'going wrong'. While iTunes does use the Gracenote CD database to get track names, it does not automatically get the cover art (and it's not stored on the CD either). I'm sure there is software that will get the art for you, though personally I don't bother. Are you using a mac or a pc?

I'm probably wrong but i think you might need to purchse the pro version of Quicktime to get the cover art. Bit of a con if you do though.
Where's Garyi when you need him?

Album covers appeared automatically on some of the albums I have on my iPod - for example, Annie Lennox sleeve miraculously appeared! I don't have pro versions of Quicktime or anything.
Might be that your particular albums simply aren't supported?

I believe the cover art issue was the Big Three music companies again trying to protect themeslves from piracy.
Apple agreed not to include cover art as part of the package, this is of course a bunch of arse.
If you purchase music from iTunes cover art will come in automatically.
For your imports, well a quick look around versiontracker using the search cover art will bring up a lot of stuff, but to be honest I simply type it into google then click on images in google to get the picture, pick one 200x200 or a little bigger (not to big). Select your tracks in itunes and drag the picture on.
Various scripts are available for applemac that will hit amazon etc, this method sometimes gives odd results, and there is the excellent itunes Catalog as well, but this costs money. There is no doubt all sorts available for PC as well as the cover art thing is an important area.

This is not the case. I have QT pro (for other reasons) and I don't get cover art. The big con about QT is that it won't go full screen without the pro version.
For what it's worth, album art strikes me as being a bit of a waste of space, particularly since it has to store the same picture for each track on the same album, which strikes me as a rather inefficient implementation.

There is a simple answer to this but it takes a lot of time if you have lots of CDs.
1 - First of all go to Amazon and search for the CD in question.
2 - Click on the small photo of the album cover - this brings up a big picture of the album cover.
3 - Higlight all the songs on the album in your iTunes library.
4 - If you have a mac, you can just drag the cover from amazon onto the bottom loft corner of the screen, that says "Drag album art here" or words to that effect.
4.1 - If this does not work on a pc, you may be able to copy and paste the cover from Amazon into iTunes - either way I am sure you will figure it out.
5 - repeat for all your other albums.
I think if you have a mac, ther is a widget that does this automaticaly, each time you play a song or load on a new cd, but I have not found it myself.
Hope this helps

A quick search on VersionTracker shows up a bunch of programs for the Mac that do this:
http://www.versiontracker.com/php/search.php?mode=basic...nes+art&plt[]=macosx
and for the PC

I found that finding the cover picture was a reasonable way of filling up the dull moments whilst ripping the cds, and you do simply drag the images from where ever you find them, even in windows, as described above. However if it really uses lots of memory, then I'm not sure I'd bother if I were you. I have a 60gb pod and I've already filled up 35gb of it without getting through all the music yet. And that's the important bit.
Good plan to treat yourself to some decent headphones as well, the supplied ones don't do the hardware justice. Several helpful threads on this subject already here I think.
Have fun

Thanks all, now I know it's not my fault .
I'll try some of the mentioned tricks soon, although I don't think I find it worth all the extra effort.
Regards!

I find it essential as it works in frontrow when selecting tracks, there are also utilities which act like a CD collection you can thumb through, you need cover art for this.
It adds around 5% to a song file in weight which I do not have an issue with, just don't add large files.
