Oranges are not the only fruit [why all naim ??]
Posted by: JamH on 17 December 2007
When I started in hi-fi [say 1965] you tended to buy bits from different manufacturers ...
e.g.
source [turntable] .. Garrard / Thorens ..
amp .. Quad / Leak ...
tuner .. Quad / Leak ...
speakers ... lots
The whole idea was that some companies were good at some stuff and some at others .. no one bought a full manufactors entire system ..
I had [1978] ..
source -- quad-amp -- quad speakers
went to [2003 ??] ..
source -- naim-amp -- quad speakers
my current system is
Linn/Resolution-Audio/Marantz -- NAP82+2xHiCap/NAP250 -- Quad ELS [original]
Is everything from the same company a good idea ??
Comments please

For the record only, in Israel oranges have a very important value.

I have heard from a certain source that there is a strong rumour that Naim Audio will revise alot of their present speakers and new line of speakers may be looming on the horizon next year. As I understand the reason behind this is that out of all the Naim components the speakers are not selling as well as intended and it is time to address this problem. Naim is aware that many Naim owners use other make speakers and dealers find certain Naim speakers fussy to position. For example a demonstration of SBL speakers at dealers can make or break a sale if not positioned correctly (thus either they will produce a great sound or awful sound) while often the same dealer would not have the same problems as to setting up other make of speakers. It appears part of the problem as to sales is that other Naim components such as amplifiers and Cd which do sell well are often compatible with other make of speakers eg, Epos, Neat, Harbeth, Dynaudio, Kudos, B&W and Wilson Benesch; there are many others.
Personally I think Naim have produced some genuinely classic quality speakers. Even the present middle range Naim Allea speakers produce beautifully dynamic open revealing sound which gels so well with the Naim components (well they should -built by Naim!). Seriously I do not know of any other one make of Hi-Fi (in the same quality league as Naim)which are doing better then Naim in selling their complete systems?
However if the rumour is true then perhaps the ripe beautiful Naim peach will evolve into a ripe beautiful genetically modified Naim peach...?

Some non-naim dealers like to knock naim because of the whole synergy thing - ie Naim gear only sounds good with other naim gear.
I got onto naim due to excellent reviews for the CD player and on audition I like the way it sounded. I shopped around to make sure I was getting the best - but I really hated the dealer that kept knocking the product due to the synergy thing.
Mind you I hate any sales person that knocks other gear. It is just such a nasty thin marketing ploy. What are the chances they have even heard the competing gear I want to know why I should buy a product not why I shouldn't buy another one.

Because by taking an orange, squeezing it into a glass and adding ice and a mint leaf you have something more dimensional in taste than just the orange juice by itself.
Because by adding Vodka to the above one then has a Screwdriver, adding a whole 'nother dimension altogether. Should one then add half a shot of Galliano to that, one then has a Harvey Wallbanger.
Of course, if one mixes one shot of Peach Schnapps, three shots of Cranberry Juice and two shots of Vodka to three shots worth of Orange juice, one can then experience Sex on the Beach, which is far better than drinking Orange juice at home alone.

And if I prefer just orange juice to any other cocktail ingredient?...

Don't dilute the fun!

Hmmm, Sex on the Beach though...

In my view, seeing as Wodka has been brought up in the Hifi Room - rather than Loony's Corner, where I have whole thread on it worth reading for the less savee members - I would see the Wodka as being the heady brew, which is music. Sometimes the addition of a juice may just dilute the effect enough for it to be easily enjoyed, without diminishing its significance. This, I count as the ability to make a good programme of music. In other words the suitable additon of something less powerful that actually adds to the abiltity to enjoy the significant, meaty, weighty part, and may well be a pleasure of itself, if not so much a pleasure on its own. The Schubert with the Beethoven, the Ballad with the Love Song, or whatever ...
It is important to equally understand that adding Orange-juice to Wodka is little short of criminal. The best enjoyment ment will come if the Wodka is taken at minus eighteen in a shot glass, in good comapany, with good strong food, preferably whilst on a dance, while with an entitrely separate glass you have the follower of good apple juice.
How this analogy applies to replay I am damned if I can quite see, but apologies for that oversight to the OP.
Perhaps the nearest anaology is that the replay set may be parallel to the glass the you drink from. Significant, but not crucial for enjoyement, perhaps?

Dear George it is indeed a sin to mix the Wodka with the O.J. as I found to my folly many years ago,it made me quite ill,I can still say Wodka but find it hard to say orange juice in any context. My Polish friends have just returned to their motherland and after the last visit they brought a local cheese, which was only from their town and I would think it would have went very well with a glass at minus eighteen,it was a smoked cheese with a wonderfull salty flavour.Anyway they saw Me eating a pear the outher day and that started a conversation all about the pears back home so when they return soon I will not be supprised they bring me some, the simple pleasures of Polish hospitality, priceless and music on a Naim also. Dear George now that you have finished your training on the nursery slopes of Polish Wodka it is time that you be introduced by your Polish friends to 'Spiritus'. Whether you are in a blizzard in North Pole, Siberia or minus eighteen in Poland a shot of 'Spiritus' is guaranteed to warm your cockles. In native Poland 'Spiritus' is wisely not drank neat. When my Polish uncle use to visit us in England he always used to bring a bottle of 'Spiritus', pour it out to a large bowl (usually a salad bowl') peel orange skins and I think Lemon skins and let the whole concoction marinate, the longer period the better .... and then drink. One must have good company, good music, dancing and last but not least good strong food. Warning: always eat when drinking 'Spiritus'. Spiritus can be bought in Poland and the last time I had it was when a Polish client gave me a bottle of it as a gift (bottle was shaped in a gothic style pyramid). Its a sort of drink where one should say a short prayer preferabley in latin before drinking.
Best regards
Romi

Hmmm.
George has it partly right - OJ in Vodka is a nice high school girl drink. However, Swill Buckets are the better way to go:
- Freeze one or two bottles of Stoli
- Pour Stoli into 1 gallon platic jug
- Take 24 limes, roll on hard surface until soft
- Squeeze lime juice into jug
- Dump spent limes into jug
- Dump 1 cup sugar into jug
- Fill to the brim with ice
- Replace cap
- Cut small hole in cap, place drinking straw in hole, duct tape joint to prevent dripping
- Shake violently
- Enjoy
Why the plastic jug? So it doesn't break when you drop it from time to time...

I have had the chance to enjoy Spiritus! It was the back-ground to one or two of the very best Parties I have been to!
