Limited Edition Japanese CDs

Posted by: Martin M on 14 August 2001

Has any tried the limited edition LP style CDs from Japan? I've noticed that XTC & Frank Zappa are being released in this format and the artists are of interest to me. Also there are some Pink Floyd albums too. Has any tried these? Are they worth the outlay?

These are just wonderful. I've got the early Genesis & King Crimson (OK I have the albums, but these were so cute). Small writing though - I think you need the albums to decipher the text!

One day all CDs will be this way

The Sony Jazz cds in the cardbord sleeves are the Mastersound range (not to be confused with the gold disc mastersound that were released in the UK). They predated the more recent Super bit-mapped Sony reissues of CBS and Columbia recordings but are similarly priced (in Japan anyway) at about £10 each. The catalogue includes many albums not easy to find, Ornette Colemans Chappaqua Suite(SP)anyone?
I have a few of these and all are excellent. The best sound is probably on Shakti's Handful of Beauty. Mclaughin, Di Meola & De Lucia's Friday night.. is also excellent although my Vivante/Philips vinyl copy trashes it entiely!
