It can't play them at all.

Yes it can play hybrid SACD (the CD layer of course), and better than most SACD players (the SACD layer).

I have a CDX/XPS (from Manu) and have bought some SACD's : e.g. Rolling Stones (Out of their heards and Big Hiits-High tide in green grass are fantastic) ; Bob Dylan (Highway 61 and Blonde on Blonde).
It works very well and the sound is better than a remastered CD or an HDCD.
Some recordings in SACD or DVD-A may be very poor. For example Capitol has reissued Pet Sounds in DVD-A and the critics gave only a 6/10 for quality.
A good site for SACD or DVD-A review is: http://www.highfidelityreview.com/index.asp
Good listening ..

Hi,
have you (or anybody else) ever made a direct comparison between a SACD and
the same 'normal' CD? Are there significant differences, that's the question! ;-)

Am I reading this thread right? Are some of us saying that the CD layer of a hybrid SACD is going to sound better than a CD or a HDCD?
If so, please explain why?
Thanks.

Good question. My answer is NO.
I have an SACD player. What I will say is that the SACD playing the SACD layer sounds a little more "airy" than the CD layer played on my CDX2, which is a function of the DSD process and I feel accounts for the descriptions lauding SACD as a closer approach to Vinyl.
If I put a normal CD in the SACD player it falls well below the playback I can get from that same CD in my CDX2 which is as it should be based on price difference alone.
The SACD player does not offer HDCD decoding so again putting an HDCD on is comparing apples with oranges and puts the CDX2 way ahead.
The other thing that is not talked about much but is also often the case is that when re-mastering a hybrid SACD disk they often change the frequency emphasis and this feeds thru' to the CD layer so that a side by side comparison between the CD layer off an SACD re-issue and an original CD only disc, sound diiferent in the same player, which makes it difficult to be definitive about the "improvment" offered by stereo SACD.
One thing for sure if you have a straight CD or HDCD and play it in a Naim CDP such as the CDX2 you will get the best from it and you will NOT hear a higher quality sound from the CD layer on an SACD, though it may sound "different" because of the changed frequency emphasis that might be involved.
