Piano Recital CDs?

Posted by: droodzilla on 04 September 2007

I bought a Rachmaninov recital from Virgin today (lots of Helios CDs available for £4 each in the Sheffield branch - could be worth checking out your local). It's my first exposure to Rachmaninov, so can't say if I like it yet, but I like the idea of a piano recital CD, and wonder what fellow forum members would recommend?

I guess that a variety of composers would add interest, but feel free to suggest single composer recitals if you feel strongly about them. I already have Argerich's debut recital, and a couple of Stephen Houghs, themed by the nationality of the composers, but can't think of anything else in my collection that fits the bill.

Gotta be Horowitz In Moscow. DGG 419 499-2 Recorded in 1986 when, at age 86, Vladimir Horowitz returned to perform in his homeland after a 60 year absence. Magnificent.

I give my highest recommendation to this wonderful pair of multi-composer recitals, if you can find them, that is:

A Recital of Intimate Works - Andrew Rangell

A Recital of Intimate Works, Vol. 2 - Andrew Rangell

Well chosen and beautifully played. One of my all-time favorites is the magical Menuet Sur Le Nom De Haydn by Ravel, which never fails to transport me directly to the Paris in my mind.

All best,
Fred
