Supertramp-Crime Of The Century
Posted by: apye! on 08 October 2009
I am looking to get this album on vinyl.
Am I right in thinking there are several versions available?
There is the original 1974 version & seems to be two re-issues. One by Speakers Corner & one in the 'Back To Black' series. Is this all correct and which would you recommend getting?
Thanks in advance...

Hi apye!
If you weren't aware, MFSL (Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs) did two versions of Crime of The Century too. The versions can be distinguished by how close to the label the recorded groove ends on side one. One version is considerably further away (about 1cm further) than the other. In my experience either is superb and better than the alternatives.
However, if you are feeling a bit flush in the wallet you might want to try and find an MFSL UHQR 200g pressing. I have one of these and it's wonderful.
Best regards,
Mark Dunn

Thanks for the reply Mark, I was not aware MFSL also did versions.
Unless anybody knows where I might be able to get these, comments on the other versions would be most welcome.

Ken Scott the engineer of the album says that the best vinyl copy of this disc is the first UK pressings- see quote from Ken below.
"IMHO, if one is going for sound quality the only version is the Brit first vinyl pressing. Beautifully mastered by Ray Staff. Incredibly pressed by the CBS Classical division and the only one I was a part of.
From what I've heard since, everything has gone down hill from there.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
Cheers."

I am a little confused which is the first UK pressing. All the 'original' 1974 copies I can find are on the A&M label AMLS68258, is this the one you mean?

There was an '80's re-issue
I have a '70's release - no idea if it's first press but it's gotta be at least 30 years old - it sounds pretty good to me - I've had no inclination to get any remaster.

Hi Jamie,
Is your 70's release on the A&M label?
Looks like I will be better off tracking down a copy!!

Have a look at the deadwax and if it says RAYS then you have a copy.

Can recommend the MFSL version of COTC.
There were also 'Audiophile' versions of the next 2 albums - Crisis What Crisis & Even In The Quietest moments. These were done by A&M Canada but pressed in Japan.
