Steely Dan Box Set

Posted by: Team Reeves on 26 September 2001

Any opinions as to whether it is better to buy the Box Set, or the individual (remastered) CDs ??

Thanks in advance

Team

Sounds good to me.

'93 actually. I too think that the box set is great VFM, but do the remasters sound better, and do they have any "bonus" tracks ?

Sounds good to me.

Do the re-masters sound better than the box set: Yes, I think so - I have only borrowed the box so my opinion is not defintive.

Do the re-masters have bonus tracks: No, none at all.

Ken, I did tell you about the box-set. Honest!

The advice given onto which remastered version you may eventually lay your hands upon might just depend on your prior experiences with The Dan on vinyl?

I mean are you a newcomer or do you have any previous experience?

Tough call this.

Don't listen to Rico BTW - he thinks Deacon Blues was a track on the Royal Scam! (the box set can do this to you apparently - cue smiley Carol smiley thing)

At the risk of upsetting you; the box set has been out a couple of years at least.

Bearing in mind the quality of Steely Dan recordings, I would have thought either version would be fine. cool

I have recently purchased the 2CD Best of Steely Dan (USA copy) 'Showbiz Kids', and as a long time owner of the Citizen Steely Dan Box Set I have to say that IMHO this new remaster does seem 'better'. I guess the new individual cds should also be improved as they have been remastered by the same/guy studio?

Regards
Geoff
(waiting for The Nightfly to be remastered/sorted - if possible!)

All the latest masters are better quality than the box set 'citizen steely dan', although early vinyl pressings still sound the best. The latest 'countdown to ecstacy' is interesing as 'your gold teeth' is longer than the original vinyl version.

'Here at the western World' is a great track on the box set but was available in 1977 on a double vinyl best of. Anybody have an opinion on the newer vinyl re-issues? I have a Linn select pressing of aja and it is fantastic. I recently bought a simply vinyl copy of the royal scam and it is CRAP compared to a mid eighties uk pressing I already have. I'm not convinced as to the origin of the simply vinyl remaster, do they use CD's or do they get their hands on the original masters, judging from the sound quality I think it's not the latter - a bit of a rip off
