Bas,
a CD2 will be a light year improvement compared to a CD5.

Hey Bas,
IMHO you're a generation behind. Soon CDXs will be entering the s/h market like there's no tomorrow and why don't you get one of those? Same will go for XPSs, and maybe the price will drop to a level acceptable to you.
Question is whether you'll find a bare CDX sufficiently better than a Hi-Capped CD5 to warrant the fuss. But at least it's upgradable. CD2 is a dead end. Why head into a dead end if you're you?

Naim equipment has an excellent reputation for longevity.
However; CD players are a mechanical beast and therefore a different animal to amps.
Most older players can be rejuvenated, at a cost; but I'd keep the much newer (and more saleable) CD5 and Hi-Cap.

Well, I have been offered a CD2 for my CD5 and a little money. When I sell my HiCap I should be able to win some money (and some space). Thereby, I have always craved for a CD2 since hearing one back in '97. It sounded perfect with my kind of music and got the adrenalin running. I am just not sure whether things have changed in the meantime and if my HiCapped CD5 is better (I think not) or if I should go for a CDX at a higher cost (as I said, no intention of going XPS and I like my music "rough").
It's not easy...

Bas,
if you're not tending to upgrade till your old and grey: go for the CD2. It is absolutely the same level compared to a bare CDX. Even a bit more analogue and therefore preferable to me. A German magazine (Image hifi) compared the both and recommended the owners of a CD2 to keep it.
It's a remarcable player!

Maybe you're right Bas. Just do it.
If you're still thinking of that ol' CD2 you heard back in 1997, you should get it and don't look back.
