HDX Wireless fix
Posted by: intouch1 on 27 June 2010
tinkering and playing around i finally came up with a way to wirelessly connect my HDX to Net/NAS.
Converted an Access Point to a bridge and plugged it into my HDX's ethernet port. Works great.....

I think "fix" is misleading because the HDX is not designed to work with wireless, but I'm glad you have got yours sorted out. As you, I and others have found out, a bridge is all that's necessary if you can't or don't want to run a wired connection from hub to HDX. It steams perfectly too but I hardly use this, my primary requirements being internet connection for the HDX and NAS connectivity. The bridge simplifies the latter because the HDX and NAS are effectively wired together via the bridge hub, as are yours with a slightly different configuration which is essentially the same for NAS access.

i've got internet that wy too.
the NAS is connected to my wireless router.
the access point/bridge that is plugged into the hdx is set to receive both, internet nd medi from the routers internet connection and ttached NAS.

Hi intouch1,
I've just acquired an HDX and am experiencing the same problem regarding connection to the net.
It's not really practical for me to hook up to my router, so I'd be grateful if you could give me a bit more info as to how you managed to achieve a wireless connection..............bearing in mind that I'm not too networking savvy, so layman's terms would be good.
Thanks in advance,
Dave.

hi dave,
i suppose you have a NAS and a router....
you need to plug your NAS into the router in order to hve wireless access to it.
then you need to get n access point and with it's software convert it into a bridge. that way, the access point will be receiving from the wireless router instead of transmitting.
finally ll you have to do is plug the bridge (receiving access point into the ethernet port of the HDX)
this way the HDX will receive your stored media and net access wirelessly from your main router.
hope this was clear enough......

To make it clear: The router needs to be a wireless router with Wifi capabilities.
The bridge needs to use the same protocol and the same band as the wireless router (e.g. 802.11n and 2.4 GHz). You need to check this.
A bridge construction connects two wired sections of a network by means of a wireless connection:
NAS--<wired>--Routerºº<wireless>ººBridge--<wired>--HDX

Quick update for any other new, (and not network savvy), HDX owners who might be having network connection problems.
I tried using a spare Apple Airport Express as a "bridge" device..........no luck at all.
Visited my Naim dealer, who said "what you need is a Homeplug kit". This consists of two units which plug into the mains, and are connected (1) to the wireless router lan socket, and (2) to the network socket on the HDX, whilst they use the mains circuit to connect to each other.
Deep Joy! The HDX instantly connected to my network, and thence, the internetto..............
So for anyone having networking problems, this does seem an instant plug 'n play fix.
Hope this is of some help.
Regards,
Dave.

I seem to remember that someone from Naim (Paul Stephenson?) recommended this approach for connecting to the internet for album/artwork lookup only, but unplug when doing serious listening. The implication that the homeplugs squirt unpleasant things into the mains, which can affect sound quality?
Not experienced it myself, but a trawl of the forum might throw up his comments.
I use an Airport Express, but I could only get it to work sensibly by using an Apple TimeCapsule as the wireless router
Cheers

Hi Nero,
Fair comment, regarding disconnecting the homeplugs for listening........I'll give it a try..........though right now, I'm just so chuffed at having overcome the network connection problems, that a heavy ripping session this evening seems likely!
Aw ra best,
Dave.
