AyreWave

Superb news for all fans of Max.
Timely for me as the faffing over my Uniti's upnp - yes it works but it feels about as advanced as a dos prompt... I've decided to revert to an mbp via optical for the moment just for convenience.
Ayrewave (will there be legal tantrums over the name?) looks promising especially as it automatically changes the sample rate and can play flac natively (are you listening Steve?)

It does not like my NAS for where the music is stored and hangs immediately. So I cannot use it.

Well so far it's only a "beta" version.
Also not sure if S. Booths intention is that it's open source or will be commercial.

If it's open source fair enough, if commercial no thanks: I'll stick with iTunes. Tried Pure Music and have deleted it; prefer to just use iTunes especially with Airplay now growing as a de facto streaming standard.quote:sure if S. Booths intention is that it's open source or will be commercial.
I find Max very useful.

Have a look at "About Ayrewave"........

So Ayre's Charles Hansen and Wavelength's Gordon Rankin is involved ...just gets better
So no lawyers then...and a bright future if this lot are involved. Certainly explains why Play and Max haven't been updated in a while.
Just tried it with some 24 bit flac files into the Uniti sounds great.
Yes it's a first attempt, not as convenient as iTunes and playing from memory is not as stable on my MbP but the sound is great.

Installed in a flash. It hung on importing my whole library, but imported a single artist just fine. Played without fuss, but to be honest, I can't pick a difference in SQ compared to iTunes. I like the no-fuss interface and potentially the automatic rate-switching. I'll watch developments, but for me it is still iTunes.

Agreed the differences are small but I do like the ability to play flac and higher bit rates without changing - one to watch. Itunes will still be my day to day choice.

I like it, and will continue to use as long as they make it available to me.
If they ultimately charge for the usage, I will make a determination at that time if it is within my means and I have continued to that point to enjoy using.
Installation was quick, have used it with iTunes and also directly with my MacBook Pro from my JOBO Spectator storage. Flawless so far.
My thanks to Matthias for bringing this to my attention.

What do you mean when you say you have used it with iTunes? Is it not just a stand-alone player?

Sorry if that was unclear. Yes, I would agree it is a stand-alone player for Mac.
I have sourced music files for the player in two ways - (a) by highlighting selections in iTunes and clicking the icon in the upper right corner of the player and (b), by highlighting selections stored on a Jobo Spectator external storage connected to the MacBook Pro by USB and clicking and dragging the file to the AyreWave icon on my desktop which loads that as a playlist. I guess it is essentially the same, iTunes is not open when I use the JOBO for selections.
Sorry for the confusion in my previous post.

Thanks for clarifying. I thought it might have also worked like the Pure Music plug-in, which was entirely unsatisfactory for me.

I don't know much about this stuff.
The reason I tried to differentiate between the two file sources is Garyi saying he couldn't access NAS - I guess the difference there being he is networked and I am hard-wired ?
Anyway, I am pleased with subtle sound changes the player seems to make on this first day in my modest system, longer term usage will tell me if indeed I find it better for me rather than just different.

Downloaded tonight, sounds very good to me. Lack of remote is a pain but you can create lists in iTunes and just import. Worth trying for nothing. Sounds better than "Play" as well as iTunes to me.

I am still very much enjoying using this player.

It's working very well for me, sounding obviously better than straight iTunes via iMac/Lavry DA-10/Nait XS/SBLs.
An excellent freebie.

Unfortunately it requires at least OXS 10.6 and above! No luck for older Mac owners!

Downloaded today, VERY GOOD !!!
Liked the feature that uploads the music to RAM before playing, now I can play the files from a slow media with great results.

For some unfathomable reason I prefer PM. I know the general consensus is that there is little difference.

Beta 3 is out. Keith, have you got memory play and exclusive access checked?

I'm using V1.0b(2), hog mode and memory play. I'll give V1.0b(3) a whirl.
Thanks Joe,

Anyone else tried an alternative open source app for Macs - 'Audirvana' ?
It sounds better than Ayrewave to these ears, delivering a better/bigger/3D sound-stage, allied to a smooth but detailed analogue-like presentation.
John.
