Up against the wall?

Posted by: timster on 26 August 2003

From what I've observed on the forum and read in the recent hi-fi+ review of the SL2, it appears that Naim speakers must be used up against the wall (or at least within inches) to get satisfactory bass performance. Is this fact or fiction? Does anyone use Naim speakers more than 2 feet away from a back wall? I have patio doors, that's why I ask.

What other speakers should I consider checking out that can provide more low frequency output than my pro-ac 1sc's and of course work well with a Naim kit? My budget is about £4K.

Cheers

SL2s are the replacement for the SBL and yeah, need to be pretty close if not hard up against the wall for best results.

What Naim kit have you got? Knowing this will provide a more measured opinion.

It's in my profile, but here it is anyway -

cdx2,fc2,112,250mkII, fraim, proac 1sc

Incidentally, I guess some may say upgrade the upstream gear first? not sure though...

£4k?

Decent second hand SBLs ( £1000? ) and improve the source/amplification. This will result in an overall improvement to the sound of your system and I have always found that bass is one aspect that is improved when upgrading in this manner.

You probably did not really want to hear this but IMO £4k is too much for you to spend on speakers.

Thanks for the response. I guess I don't have to spend all the 4K on speakers!

Re-SBL,
a) Don't they too need to be tight against the wall? My room won't allow that.
b) Not sure of the availability of s/h SBL's over this side of the pond.
c) I've not heard SBL's either and I would be concerned buying sight unseen.

cheers

If you're buying new stuff, you can listen in a shop first.

By all means hear what a better preamp can do for your music. I expect the 112/FC2 is the weakest link in your system by far, and a better preamp will seem like better speakers.

Timster,
If the Naim speakers won't work Spendors will. I have mine about 1 foot from the wall and toed in. They are also very efficient and will work well with (gee I just saw you had a 250 II) never mind you have plenty of power. I have 3/2s that give out plenty of base but there are other models to choose from.

I'd get a 282 preamplifier and forget the speakers till later.

Please on my mother's soul DO NOT use a subwoofer in a stereo system!! Big Grin

They can work - I have heard the big one from Linn and it makes a real, pleasant improvement.

If people come back and say that I am wrong then fine, but I heard what I heard and liked it.

I have also heard sistems with subwoofers in them performing good. It depends on a lot of different factors but if the circumstances are right they can perform very well.
