Oh what the H***!
I was busy booking the early Punk bands into venues around town in the mid 70's such as "The Demics", "The Diodes", "Teenage Head", "The Government", "Nash the Slash" and "Rough Trade". The Police when they went on their first tour of North America in 1978/79 where classified as Punk (managed to book them then too). Those were the carefree teenage years.
I'm definitely in the Punk started with the MC5, Stooges, Velvet Underground camp.
For an interesting read on this and other Rock/Punk/NewWave/Alternative/ etc. trends check out the publications of Alan Cross and his radio (now syndicated) program "The Ongoing History of New Music" on radio station CFNY "The Edge" 102.1 in Toronto and online at www.edge.ca
Cheers

The Police certainly weren't regarded as "punk" in the UK. In fact, by 1979, very little was regarded as punk at all.

Although Stewart Copeland was a nice guy (I knew him quite well back then) The Police were never part of the punk scene per se in the general scheme of things. I suppose a (very) loose connection could be that Stuart had been hanging around with Wayne County and co in London 1976/7 so I guess from that he could be called part of the first New Wave that grew out of CBGBs and Maxs in 74/75 and rolled on into the UK in 76 even though he was playing in a band with ex Gong and Soft Machine members and Jazz Fusion boy Gordon.
The Police later stumbled across a popular musical formula and changed their image to suit the times. Worked quite well didn't it?
The first wave of what the tabloids had christened Punk was well and truly over by then.

Punk, and the spirit of punk - being music to shake up the estabishment and offend generally, especially parents who would ban such records from the parental home - has to begin 8th January 1935, birth of Elvis Presley.
The world began with Elvis. Hazel O'Conner., bless her purple cotton socks, did a record of it. "In the beginning of the world...." Elvis is in there somewhere - around the 7th day or something.
You know I am right.
