How are you guys doing in the cold

Posted by: DAVOhorn on 10 January 2009

Dear all,

it is a reasonable warm sunny day here in sydney, cool for this time of year, but quite comfortable.

So how are you guys doing in frozen snowy Europe?

I have seen photos of frozen coast lines and rivers around the UK and also in Europe. So it seems you are having a rough time.

What with airports and rail and road closures etc etc.

So how have you managed to keep warm?

regards David

David,

the 29C in my part of town is just perfect for me, sun & no humidity - what else can you ask for. Cool

It's another 'same same' day here too... Cool

Actually, it's one thing I miss from the UK - seasons. Wrapping up in layers during the cold. Or appreciating sunny days when they come along..!

Dear All it seems i have spoken too soon as we are having thunder lightning and heavy rain.

Still a comfortable temp though as both back and front doors open to allow the cool breeze through my humble abode.

Great picture Harold.

I wonder how the winter migrants from britain are doing in spain and portugal?

Went for a 6 - 7 mile walk yesterday down near Ashurst with a couple of friends - boy were we glad to reach the pub with a huge open log fire (and a welcoming pint of course!)

Fingers crossed this works!!

A walk with warm clothing on the snow watching the happy children with their sledges can be great.
In our region this is a rare event, so I have no cause for complaint.

Best wishes

Yes we have had one cold spell here in LA this winter, One series of rain storms and now it is 83 degrees today. I took a lovely drive thru Pasadena with a friend after breakfast. Joggers around the Rose Bowl and the second had sales there. Camellias, Aloes and Bird of Paradise blooming. Sigh!

Love the look of bare trees in snow, reminds me of Philadelphia. I like pollarded trees, but I mentioned this in a masters program in Landscape Architecture and was practically booed out of the room. They really hadn't traveled or see what I see as an artist.

Well for the Dutch there's only one thing you can do in winter when the canal's freeze down, go ice skating. That's what I did this weekend.

I remember an art historian commenting on all the old paintings around the 1700s and the snow scenes, he said the artists were recording a long period of colder winters which they weren't used to.

Yes Wolf, there is a doc you can watch free on google video or you-tube called "The Great Global Warming Swindle" which mentions a medieval cold period or maybe it was 1700's. They go into the old paintings as well. Not sure if I agree with everything in the film but it brings up many interesting points........

It's currently -11 degrees Fahrenheit (-18 Celsius) where I live! With the wind, it feels like -28 F (-33 C).

A bit chilly if you ask me.

-19F (-36F with wind chill) right now. Lots of snow on the ground.

Supposed to warm up to the mid twenties tomorrow--should be excellent conditions for cross country skiing. Can't wait!!

Despite cold and snow if your an outdoor winter sports lover it's the best winter in Chicago in years.

It only dropped to -7F here this morning. Almost balmy by comparison. An hour north of here reached -26F earlier today. At least Spring training is a little less than a month away.
