most appreciated, your system thoughts are....

OK Guys, down a well trodden path I go but your advice is most welcome as I follow my ears....
I am on the market for a new system to play music on. Sounds simple, but then there is the age old question of "her indoors".
Considerations have been
1) It must look good
2) It must look good
3) It must look good
4) It must look good
5) Do you need speakers ?
Having considered Cyrus equipment and not really been happy with it, I have turned to Naim as the "Glasgow Firm" produces kit that (quote my wife) "looks like a midi system".
I am sure that most of you have had that one thrown up before but at least I have the sense to tell her that MY first priority is listening to music and I will take her thoughts totally into consideration.......

To solve the question of looks I have had to bite the bullet and consider the Fraim - not the most financially sound move but at least the components are going to sit on the ideal platform, whatever they are and will be.......I have also to include my turntable (gasp!) in the equation and a wall-shelf is a no-no so another expensive level is the only answer.
Speakers have been given the green light already - floorstanding and maple (Allae). And believe me, that's a compromise ! Naim should take great pleasure in de-boxing the shape as the curved top sold them to her !!!
The only real problem is that the expense of this will limit the choice of "those black boxes" and this is where I ask for the benefits of your previous experiences before I sit down to listen at my local Naim dealer.
So the system will be :
CD5 / NAC 112 / NAP 150 / ALLAE
and as time prgresses, upgrades will be made.
Comments ?

Wecome aboard
What could be prettier? - especially on Fraim.
A nice well balanced system.
The trick is to include SWMBO and her favourite CD's at the dem.
Good luck.

Could you slinky a flat cap in there?
I had a 112-150 connected to Sbls for a while. I also had the CD5 at the same time. Infact I had it for around 2 weeks. Its did music really well and coped with the SBLs admirably.
However this was at modest volumes in a smallish room. If your room is any bigger than 5 metres by 5 metres then at loud volumes I think you'll have a struggle.
If volume is not a problem buy with confidence. But could you afford to stick a flat cap on that pre amp? I had a hi-cap on the 112-150 and the difference was not subtle.

Thanks for the reply guys, truly appreciated.
Wife not going to be at the dem until I decide "it's for me" (I think she might well be deaf !)
What is SWMBO ? A new kind of department store loyalty card ?

As for Flat Cap's etc., that will probably happen in time but it would need to encompass a new level for the Fraim with each new addition - not a problem but something for the future. I will need to negotiate the Phono MC install first

Room size is 5.11 metres x 3.5 metres and only a fireplace will be between the speakers. I have no real intention to "turn the volume to 11" but like a good blast of rock music now and then........
Once again, a million thanks.

Hi Mick
Thanks for the insight - guess who is now feeling rather stupid for not working that one out and asking SWMBO for her idea on it's meaning.
Told her the answer - she says the bruises will heal in time and I should be lucky

Mike,
"She who must be obeyed".
Is that from a British made TV show....
Vaguely remembering,

She asked for a Grand piano.
All I could give her was an upright organ...

Fraim seems overkill for that setup? IMHO a 'cap of some short should come first.
Also my lovely missus (MLM?) didn't like the look of the Fraim at all (it was out of my price range anyway).
I'm not anti-fraim BTW...

prowlaThanks for your sentiment but I feel that you have mis-understood things a little.
For us, Fraim is within budget and it is the
ONLY rack SWHBO likes. Quote from SWMBO - "It's our living room not the shop you are buying the stuff from" ('nuff said !)
I appreciate that the addition of improved power supplies will certainly make things better in time but that will be a future upgrade

I will now refer to another post I made where racks were the debate to
suggest that we should seriously consider equipment racks as a primary purchase as they have a great outcome on the "flavour" of a system. To that extent, the Fraim couldn't have come at a better time as it will allow each and every component and upgrade to reveal their true performance.
Saying that - each to their own !

The Allaes are too good IMO for the electronics, unless as you say, upgrades are coming soon (ie CDX2/202/200 minimum), but why not get Intro2s and use the better electronics on them?
They sound really good if you push them (the speakers).

joe90Agree to an extent but wife hates look of Intro's and loves Allae's - if she got her way I would have headphones !!!! (note to Mr Toy - imaginge BC with a pair of Stax on

)
112 / 150 should be OK with Allae's - enough people in the forum use them happily enough as long as they are not "cranking it".
PSU upgrades etc., will follow in time - getting the kit in and installed will be the #1 priority.
I don't know where you buy your Naim kit but the electronics you suggested with the Intro2's would mean I would need another £1500 for my budget - want my address to send a cheque as I ain't got the money tree at the bottom of the garden ?

The great thing about the curved top of the Allaes is that the wife or girlfriend can not plonk pot-plants of ornaments on top of them.

If you've set your heart on a Fraim then I guess you'll be pretty sure that you'll have a good base for all future upgrades.
Hope it goes well.
(I can't help feeling that low-end Naim kit on a Fraim is a kindof son-of-mulletness though ...

Naim : Low-End ?
Kinda makes the "World Class Hi Fi" statement by Naim on their literature a bit OTT. IMO their base products are still superior to most manufacturers "hi-end" kit. I am sure the lads in Salisbury would agree !
Anyway, the rack was chosen for looks, not budget. I would have liked to have better kit but that will certainly come in time (I think a HiCap could be on the birthday wish-list)
Mulletness - not a known phenomenon north of the Border. Is it an upgrade that is recommended ?

low end ?

Posted on: 28 August 2003 by prowla
I meant low-end Naim kit, as in the bottom of the Naim range, rather than low-end in terms of what's available from the run of the mill high street shop!

Hi Paul
No harm intended - I am just about to spend a large chunk of cash on the system !
FMI - what do you use ?
Posted on: 28 August 2003 by joe90
I saw your previous reply to my statement.
And hey, if you get the Allaes and it keeps your lady happy then that's great. And if you're going to get a CDX2/282/250 later (or something like it) then there's no issue. I only get worried about people who think that the speaker is where it all happens, and that the electronics simply spin the discs and house the volume control. Since that's not the case here, then go for it.

Hi Joe
I fully appreciate your comments and I am also totally aware that the source is the fundamentally most important piece of equipment since any information cannot be retrieved later on. I am sure the components will certainly get me off the ground in a good way !
I also look at it this way - wife happy with the looks, less sonic interference from her and I get to enjoy the music more !!!!!
I also love the comment from Andrew Randle regarding the curved top - never thought about the anti-plant angle.
Posted on: 28 August 2003 by joe90
"Sonic interference from wife"
Brilliant.
We should investigate the phenomenon and whether using a heavy isolation plinth (say granite) fixes the problem in 100% of cases!
If anybody let's someone put a plant on a speaker they need marriage guidance!!

Hi, again.
My system is CDX/82+2xHi/250 on an Optimum rack (10mm glass shelves with metal posts). On the rack the CDX, 82 and 250 sit on Stands Unique Carbon Isolators, which I found helped the timing.
The rack wasn't my choice (I was leaning towards Quadraspire), but my lovely SWMBO had the casting vote (of one!). Either way it's better than what I had before (all the kit piled on an old Sound Organisation rack which Mike Lacey had off me), and looks rather nice.
My main problem at the moment is a slight lack of treble definition/sparkle. The bass is great, deep and well controlled, and generally rocks along quite nicely. (BTW my speakers are Kan I's on Kan II stands, but they are very big Kans!)
I've been doing a bit of fiddling with mains as well. I haven't got a separate spur, but have made up distribution plugboards and mains cables. Definitely still tinkering though.

joe90I tend to find that upgrading the amount of time spent abroad in the sun with SWMBO and increasing the gold content of her jewellery box usually decreases the interference. Unfortunately, I tend to find this is a short term measure and only then kept in check by liberal application of soap (operas).
Your granite plinth idea sounds very interesting - is the application of this orally or very quickly on the top of the head ?
prowlaRacks - we never get the one we really wanted as the casting vote is never ours. Hence the Fraim in my case.......
Nice system !
