So what is your most favourite album by the amazing Mary Chapin Carpenter?

Hometown Girl Released: 30 July 1987
State of the Heart Released: 13 June 1989
Shooting Straight in the Dark Released: 9 October 1990
Come On Come On Released: 30 June 1992
Stones in the Road Released: 4 October 1994
A Place in the World Released: 22 October 1996
Time* Sex* Love* Released: 29 May 2001
Between Here and Gone Released: 27 April 2004
The Calling Released: 5 March 2007
Come Darkness, Come Light Released: 30 September 2008

Which one of these albums do you treasure most?
Posted on: 25 February 2010 by Lontano
I have two of her albums plus the Essential. I would choose Stones in the Road. However, none of her music makes it to my treasured shelf - I have it filed under pleasant.

I have 7 of those, a bit like choosing one of your children. So I choose all of them.

If I had an essential shelf, she would be on it.

It would be a pretty big shelf though!

Not sure if it will be the new one & £17.49! Eek ouch!
Posted on: 25 February 2010 by Guido Fawkes
I suspect it'll be cheaper through Rounder.

Well it is on my list of essential purposes - this after all MCC.

Are you implying she put on a few pounds?

Adrian MCC's elpees should be on everybody's treasured shelf - she is not only the best singer songwriter ever to emerge from the US of A, but also a very nice person - she suffers from depression, but is OK now and gives most of what she earns to charities. I've seen her live when she came to the UK and she was quite sensational; somebody who wants everybody in the audience to enjoy the show. She also answers letters. Only fault I can find is she once admitted she had bought a PC album and liked it.

No, that I have many essentials.

I like "Stones On The Road" and "The Calling". What do you recommend ROTF?

Mind you, I wish they would remaster "The Calling", sonically it's a horror show.

I like her work but it varies within and between albums a lot I think so choosing one would be a shame.

I'd have to go for 'Stones In The Road' as the most played at home, and 'Time Sex Love' as my least favourite. I don't have the last or first one on that list.

The Calling could do with a re-master I agree - the music is great, but the loudness ...

This Shirt is my favourite MCC track - beautiful song.

Come On, Come On is my favourite MCC album, but they are all essential listening for me.

ROTF - I am sitting in my office playing the Calling now - I understand why you would like her a lot. I'll play it a few more times and see if I can make a connection to get it to the treasured shelf. Definitely prefer her to that Bulat lady.

Give MCC more of a challenge than that... Big Grin

This a Mary Chapin Carpenter thread - a what's Basia Bulat's best album is a thread yet to come .... comparing America's best singer/songwriter ever (MCC) with Canada's most innovative new talent or Britain's queen of folk, Karine, is challenge too far for me - all three have a place on my treasure shelf Smile

I do listen to you ROTF. A couple of years ago I was driving from Melbourne to Sydney and stopped off for a spot of lunch in the sleepy town of Wangaratta. Walked into the local record store and there it was in rural outback Oz, the new Basia Bulat album. Bought it because of you to brighten up the long journey home - not sure it helped at the time though but we did make it back to Sydney. Anyway, I have bought the second album as well because of you. Now I am going to go off and look for Karine.

You've said that twice now. If you say it again, I'll have to turn this into a Bruce Springsteen thread Winker

Karine puts a new track for free download on her site every month - they are non-LP tracks usually - Karine Polwart downloads - you have to tell her your name and e-mail.

Really hope you like some of the music I suggest

Just checked my collection and I have got Scribbled in Chalk and This Earthly Spell. I really should give them listen. I probably bought them when you promoting them a while back.

You might just want to start out with the Essential and branch out from there. I just bought tickets this a.m. to see her in June. I am stoked.

IIRC the compilation called The Essential doesn't have This Shirt on it, which I thought was a shame.

I can't recommend just one MCC elpee - so I'll leave that to others.

MCC on vinyl? We all search for the holy grail, but have yet to find it. I would have paid silly hi-fi show prices if I'd found MCC on vinyl.

Actually I was thinking of another compilation, Party Doll and Other Favorites and not the Essential. Party Doll does have This Shirt on it. All of her records have merit and are worth having if you like her style.

I do have a couple of early albums on vinyl but I do not believe most of her catalog was ever released on LP. At least I haven't seen it.

Party Doll and Other Favorites

Hi Matt

I haven't got that record - is it a straight compilation or does it have any material not available on her other records?

Many thanks, Rotf

Surely her best album is Come On, Come On.

The problem with MCC is that virtually all her albums have 25% of the songs which are absolutely gorgeous, 50% excellent, and the remaining 25% forgettable (usually the more Country songs).

Having said that they are worth buying just for the 25%.

I've 10 albums of hers and all are worth having. In a (somewhat) similar vein Shawn Colvin and Jonatha Brooke are fabbo too.
