Selling vinyl on the Net
Posted by: Not For Me on 02 July 2003
Following my frequent memory lapses, I find I have 40 + vinyl duplicates to dispose of (well that many identified so far)
They range from brand new Hardfloor / Elektrolux releases, through post-punk, ambient, electronica etc. etc. (No hairy wank though)
I know I could go down the Record & Tape Exchange, but am always disappointed by the amounts offered.
Has anybody used E-Bay, Musicstack, GEMM., Loot, Discogs or other routes to turn unwanted but cared for vinyl into beer tokens or more records ?
Good or bad experiences ?

Whoh!
I didn't mean to do a For Sale ad! Honest!
I would love for them to go to good homes, so I will type up a list in Word and e-mail to those interested.
I found another double (an Anne Clark LP!) since I posted last.

Dozy,
I am not a breadhead, or seeking to set up a business on this, so you never know - I think £5 might be O.K!

I have had fantastic results on eBay. I sell stuff I don't want and this finances purchases of stuff I do want (have to find the dosh to buy all those New Order aand Kraftwerk bootlegs from somewhere!)
I once sold a Durutti Column promo (signed, only 25 made) to a bloke from Italy for £811!!! People pay what they want to pay. In terms of mailing stuff out, you can buy jiffy bags or mailers in 10s, 25s, 50s etc cheaply from Covers 33 (type that into Google). You can also sign up for Paypal, which allows you to receive instant payment from people abroad in sterling or US dollars - straight into your bank account (but sellers have to pay fees)
Once you've registered, eBay is reall easy to use. The only problem is that you need a scanner or digicam to take pics of the sleeves or the records you're selling, and you need some spare time to put everything up.
I resent wasting time going to Record & Tape Exchange and getting ripped off. If I can't sell unwanted stuff on eBay I just take it to the Oxfam Music Shop on Marylebone Lane.

Kevin,
Have you sold stuff on eBay recently? I'd intended to sell some LPs this way, but it seems even quite scarce items are currently not attracting much interest and selling for pretty poor prices. More commonplace items are not selling at all

"commonplace items are not selling at all" ?
$122 for a Beatles White Album. 2/7/03
It is a bit variable on prices after being outbit on an Abraxas 180gm at > $30 I got one for $15 including P & P. Go figure.
I have only bought so far but my other half has sold quite a few Videos and memorabilia items using Pay Pal.

Hi David
I'm selling about 35 items at the moment, a mixture of 7"-ers, CDs and posters. Some stuff is fetching very good prices, some isn't. A lot of t is down to luck and timing, to be honest. Sometimes something won't go, or reach its reserve, but you can relist it a week later and it goes for twice what you'd hoped! It all depends in who's out there. For example, I sold a perfectly bog-standard 1980s reissue of the Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds" and I got £14.10 for it! I guess it just meas someone was looking for that pressing to complete his collection and he happened to be looking on eBay at the particular time my record was up for sale.
I'd say the best things to do to ensure a sale are:
1. Put it up for 10 days, so as many people see it as possible
2. Use a good quality picture- and put it in the gallery (only costs 15p extra)
3. Write your copy carefully - especially the headline.
4. Be patient - and realistic
Hope that helps

A TIP
Just arrived Santana 1st album the seller packed the album in its paper cover on top of its cover. This should save the album trying to come through the side of the sleeve during transit. This happened to a mint album I bought recently.
Normal packing seems to be thick card board sleeve with extra cardboard stiffener inside with the album.

A good point Howard. Records (LPs, 10", 7", 12") should always be shipped out of their sleeeves - that way there is no chance of sleeves splitting or getting ringmarks, etc. I always do this when shipping LPs.
The best form of maile for LPs is what's called a "cruciform". When "assembled" it provides extremely robust protection (even the Russian Post Office can't bend LPs when they're in these!) without the need for stiffeners. This in turn keeps the weight down leading to lower shipping costs. Which compensates for the fact that cruciforms cost more than the usual cardboard LP mailers.

Kevin,
Thanks for all that - very helpful. I'd kind of got the impression that things on eBay had slowed down a lot in the last few months, particularly in the vinyl department, but maybe I've misjudged the position? Do you have any experience of selling on NetSounds or Gemm?
David
PS: may I ask what name you trade under on eBay or is that privileged info

Hi everyone,
There are some interesting points raised here with regard to selling old vinyl. I have a small problem in that the thread has turned to a "for sale" ad of sorts which is obviously against the rules of the Naim forum.
Having said that, I'm all for members sharing their music with others and I'm letting this thread continue on the basis that there'll be no more talk of selling. Members are more than welcome to swap lists by private e-mail or in Private Topics.
Needless to say, if the Music Room starts to become a music selling site then, threads will start disappearing.... I know that'll no doubt open the door to all sorts of complaints from those unable to empathise with our position but rules are rules and there has to be a level playing field throughout the entire forum.
In vinyl veritas.
Richard

Aren't you being a bit po-faced here Richard?
I asked about selling Music ON THE NET, not via the forum!

- No, not really.
I asked about selling Music ON THE NET, not via the forum!
- True enough. I'm not accusing you of doing anything wrong but as I'm sure you'll agree questions such as this tend to lead to threads turning into "for sale" ads (as has happened here) which are against the forum rules. You'll note that this thread is still intact and nothing has been deleted...
I think Alex raises some valid points which I'm sure I'll be raising the next time we review the forum.
I'm all for people swapping and trading CDs and vinyl - heck, that's exactly how I've got the collection I do. Fact is, the rules remain and as such must be enforced with no exceptions, no matter how reasonable they may be. Otherwise, as can be seen elsewhere, you are soon faced with an anarchic mess.... Sorry.
