Which Cartridge next ???
Posted by: MJSM on 10 November 2003
I'm in the process of upgrading my sistem (see my other topic (My Next Upgrade (Final??), and am not too 'up' on a replacement for my K9.
I am looking at the S/H market just now (being a Scotsman, saving money is in the genes) and have seen the following:
Linn Trak
Linn K18 (which I have had before and liked)
Lyra Lydian B
Rega Michell (sorry it's actually a Supex)
I am looking to spend no more than say £250 S/H for the cartridge/stylus and want to get the best I can VFM wise.
I will also need to buy MC cards for my '72' if I go the MC way.
LP12/Ittok/K9
CDP3.5
72/Snaps/250
(not worth mentioning the speakers as these will be replaced too)
All advice gratefully considered
Mike
Oops, forgot to mention Dynavector, I don't know this company, what is the range and prices new and S/H ??

ummm... i use a dv 10x5 on a rega p25 (£250 new) and it sounds lovely. not being able to audition carts, i bought this based on some extremely favourable reviews and good f/back from this forum about the 10x4. this is a high output mc, so you wouldn't need to change your boards either.

Several Traks on epay recently. I can't understand the high prices they are fetching for a cartridge that was basically a graded Asak. They are also very old. None can be newer than mid eighties.
I use a Lyra Lydian B

Secondhand carts are a bit of a risky area, particularly if they're old ones. The suspension system can seriously deteriorate with age and the cantilever and tip may have suffered damage. You'd really be better off to buy a new one. There's plenty of options in the £250-350 price range and at least you'd get a warranty with it.
Dynavector make a wide range of MC carts, but the ones within your price range will probably be the 10x5 and 20x. Both enjoy an excellent reputation and come in a high output version which means you can use your existing MM input. I've got a 10x4 (earlier version) and it sounds excellent on my LP12/Ittok.

Thanks for that Bob, I am not familiar with the Trak, so I was hoping someone would put me right on it.
I quite fancy the Lyra myself actually, (if I can get one cheap), what do they retail for ??
Also, can you tell me what you had before it, and how does it compare with a Linn cartidge of the same price range (or higher).
Appreciate the feedback

Mike

Thanks Davis, sound advice obviously, I'm going off the Trak unless I can get it for nothing (not likely) so that I could afford the 250-ish refurb costs.
The Lyra is looking good at the moment as the seller assures that it is quite new, and in A1 condition.
Per,
Thanks for the info re the Linn cartridges, I know where I can get a Troika for 300 quid, but I'd probably have to pay another 250 to get that redone, so it may be the Lyra, or a Dynavector for me.
Thanks to all of you so far, helps a lot with te decision making process.

Seriously consider a Denon 103.
Its a true bargain
By the way I bought a Trak. new, circa 1985 and it was only 80 quidish then.

When I upgraded to Lyra Lydian from K18 on an Ittok (about 10 years ago) it was the biggest upgrade i'd ever made (bigger than lingo, cirkus etc IMO).
When I replaced the worn out Lydian with a Lydian B a couple of years ago I got a 40% trade in against the new Lydian B, so this is potentailly worth £240 against a £600 cartridge.
I'm very happy with the LydianB.
I didn't know the Lydian was discontinued, so I'm not sure whether you could trade against alternative Lyra cartridges?.
I would certainly want to hear it before I parted with my money though.
