Could anyone please recommend a 'start here' album from Joy Division for me...?
I respect their music and want to dig in but dont know where to start.
Thank you
Gordon

Easy one that,
Unknown Pleasures (their first)
Closer (their second and last)
The recently issued anniversary issues are recommended.
Wonderful music to me ! Enjoy.

Buy the recently released reissued 'collector's editions' of Unknown Pleasures and Closer. Both are truly wonderful records. The rereleases come with bonus live disc. The band were much harder live, while the records were subtler affairs, influenced by Martin Hannett's production.
I saw then in '79 when they supported the Buzzcocks and it was the best gig I have ever experienced.
They have a reputation as miserabilists, but I find the music really uplifting. Turn it up, turn down the lights and wonder how you missed them.....

Control is a great film. Just don't expect to leave the cinema with a smile on your face and a skip in your heart.
The lead actor captures Curtis brilliantly, flailing arms included.

Some Joy Division really grabs me but I've always had more of an affinity with the New Order....
With regard to the film above, I remember watching a double bill at the old Penultimate Picture Palace in Oxford - Christine F followed by Sid and Nancy. Had to phone my father to feel alive after that!

Never seen Sid and Nancy, but Christiane F is a very good film, with a great Bowie soundcheck. Shooting up into the neck was a bit much though.

Ah, the good old PPP - the cinema that introduced me to arthouse film. Good memories of that place in the early 80s!

Hi
What is the sound quality on the new 'collectors edition' versions like? Have the albums been remastered, and if so to what effect?
Cheers

Be careful, there is Jeff Buckley-esque barrel scraping where JD are concerned. Have a listen to the first New Order album. It's very dark and still sounds pretty much like Joy Division, very far from what New Order were later to become.

Yes they have, and to very good effect in my view. They sound a lot more immediate and accessible.

Movement also has hints of very early Cure, circa Seventeen Seconds, about some of the the tracks.
Also the early singles by New Order pre- Blue Monday are very sombre and brooding.
That said I can only think of one track I really cannot get on with, the last one on Power, Corruption and Lies - Leave Me Alone.
Looking forward to seeing Control at the local cinema this week.

Although Unknown Pleasures is their classic debut, it's not the best introduction to Joy Division in my opinion.
By far the best in my opinion is "Substance 1977-1980" which includes all their very best tracks, many of which never appeared on either of their two 'proper' albums
e.g.
Love Will Tear Us Apart
Transmission
These Days
She's Lost Control (different mix)
Digital
Incubation
No Love Lost
Yes it's a 17 track compilation but it's probably the best single CD of Joy Division you can get!

You can't go wrong with getting all the decent albums:
Closer
Unknown Pleasures
Substance
The recording quality is fantastic in parts expecially the spatial recording techniques used on Closer.

Still is really where it happens–a good cross-section of material with (on vinyl) excellent grey-kraft packaging.
