Car rental in London - Any tip is greatly appreciated.

Posted by: QTT on 18 November 2008

Hello,

I am about to spend a month in London, so any tip would be greatly appreciated, especially in the areas of insurance, hidden costs, etc.

Since I am traveling alone so I am not interested in high-end, expensive car. A compact will do.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Try easycar - seem to have the best rates unless you have a corporate deal with one of the bigger providers. Then again, are you sure you actually need a car in London? In central London parking is a nightmare and feroiously expensive. Public transport generally works ok.

Have you driven in London/S.E. England before QT?
If you are planning on travelling around central London I would stick to public transport & taxis.
It'll work out cheaper & much less hassle.
If you are planning on travelling around London,
& outside the Greater London area just hire a car for the latter.

TFL is the place to start looking if you can possibly do without a car in London and Oyster may well be the ticket you could use.

Forget the car, driving in London can be an absolute nightmare. Plenty of tubes and buses that can take you just about anywhere.
Have fun..

I agree bus and tube in the center of London a hire car if you are on the outskirts and want to "sightsee". We flew to USA with Virgin and they had a discount deal with National, so maybe other airlines have similar arrangements.

Thanks so much for the responses.

I will be mainly traveling between Camden and Windsor so may be public transport is not very convenient. However, I am a bit concerned about the cost of insurances though.

Do check out the public transport options. If you decide to go down the car hire route have a look at moneysavingexpert.com regarding policies that can be purchased seperately which generally work out much cheaper. search car hire on the site.

QTT,
Camden Town to Waterloo via Northern Line then Waterloo to Windsor via surface train. If traveling during normal times then the Waterloo > Windsor > Waterloo should be against the flow and not too grim. Might be worth a thought and with the insurance saved a cab at Windsor to final destination?

Hi all,

I am overwhelmed by the good, informative responses. Maybe car is only good for some sightseeing trips outside London then.

Thank you and much appreciated!

As an ex-Londoner, I have to say don't drive in London unless you have
(a) a lot of time to waste
(b) almost infinite reserves of patience
(c) a navigator with you with an intimate knowledge of the capital's roads.

It appears you can get a train between Camden and Windsor with just one change (I can hardly believe this myself) - http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/en/pj/tt.
