Which Joan Baez CD

Posted by: HuwJ on 23 January 2010

Hi Guys,

I've been listening to Joan on Spotify and want to get a CD with ideally, Dixie, Diamonds & blowin included. There are dozens of them on Amazon, anyone know which contain the best selection of other songs and are well recorded? I was thinking 'Diamonds'.

Input appreciated,
Huw

I think I might be inclined to start with a compilation spanning her career and then work back from that to individual albums according to your preference.

Hi Huw

I am a huge fan of Joan. Best cds/vinyl to start with in no particular order are:

Diamonds and Rust
Farewell Angelina
Any Day Now (Double Lp/Cd)
David's Album
Recently
Golden Hour Presents Joan Baez.

Start with these first and you won't go wrong.

As an aside, there is some great stuff on Joan Baez in the movie, "No Direction Home", Scorcese's masterpiece on Dylan.

I much prefer Baez' early, more pure folk period, on Vanguard recordings(beautifully remastered), including her first two solo records, two live concert recordings, Joan Baez 5 and Farewell Angelina. I suppose if I had to pick one favorite it would be Farewell Angelina, which has some great early Dylan songs. I alsoo highly recommend the DVD of her recent PBS television documentary about her career. If you want to read a very entertaining bio about Baez' early years with her sister Mimi, Dylan, and Richard Farina you may wish to pick up a used copy of the book by Richard Hadju called "Positively 4th Street", very well done. Baez was/is a great singer and a remarkable human being.

yeah that documentary really made me more aware of her, great that she has her son in her band and a really nice talk with ex husband David.

She's still trouping around working at peace and equality.

I would recommend Ring Them Bells - excellent live album from the early 1990s
