Unity gain a bit noisy

Posted by: garyi on 17 November 2006

I have a 202, and now a yamaha surround processor connected to the unity gain (AV) on the 202.

When the yamy is on, and even when it is off there is a noise emitted from the hifi when the 202 is on unity gain.

Its not so prominent when plying DVDs, but with the TV can be heard in quiet moments.

It sounds like a really high pitched noise, almost like them old spectrum games loading up, not quite like that but a bit annoying.

As I say though, I can turn the yamaha off and the noise persists so it seems to be something else. This noise does not occur on any other input on the 202.

Any ideas?

If you are using a long lead to connect the AV processor to the pre-amp it may be caused by that. I had to put 2 small value resistors in line with my 5 meter lead.

Thanks guys.

The hicap, poweramp and processor all goto the same place.

The lead to the pre is half a metre from Chord Co so I do not think this is the issue.

I will revisit the power thing though. Before I had a bank of plugs in the unit the hifi was in, with no issues. I now have them in a different configuration so perhaps something has gone awry.

Does the noise go if you plug the processor lead in to say, CD input, on the pre and turn volume up half way?

If so, see Trevor's post above. We can supply slugged leads via your dealer

Gary,

Is this noise or hum? I had a Yam plugged into my Naim stack and had the latter. Butchery (minor!) of my 82 sorted it.

Well as I stated the noise persists even with the yamy turned off, so I do not see how this can be the issue.

you dont need to turn it on. That test is just for diagnosis purposes.

Well bugger me, the noise has totally gone now. How unusual.

I guess its a mains issue of some kind, but I will leave it for now.

Its probably the yamaha then. You could try a slugged lead.
