Improving your worldview

I never did comment on A Confederacy of Dunces. This is simply a splendid novel of which I know of no equal - would love to hear candidates?

Anyone in search of a rip-roaring comic adventure should trust their time to one Ignatius J. Reilly, "huge, obese, fractious, fastidious, a latter day Gargantua, a Don Quixote of the French Quarter."

And that's the truth.

Highly agreed, a definite classic. Highly recommended to everyone with even a modicum of a sense of humor.

Howard,

You will be quite pleased, I imagine.

PS - if there is anything else out there resembling this I would love to know.

I've been searching for something new book-wise and your suggestion sounds bang on. I will definitely give it a read.

Seems like a fair exchange of ideas too, given that you are now at least curious about Brokeback Mountain! Smile

Thanks

Some suggestions.

'Cold Comfort Farm' by Stella Gibbons is an english classic. Written in 1932 it is a tad dated but follows a humorous rural community through farcical adventures. Timelessly funny.

Secondly the first three books by Louis De Bernieres (who later wrote Captain Corelli) are very funny, bawdy, and full of sharp satirical jabs at latin american politics. They have a touch of magical realism like Gabrial Garcia Marquez, but are funnier (if less lyrical). Called 'The War of Dr Emmanuels Nether Parts/Senor Viva and The Coca Lord/The Troblesome Offspring of Cardinal Guzman. According to Amazon now available as a set!.

Bruce,

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll see if I can't find 'Cold Comfort Farm' at my local bookstore.

Doug & Howard,

Let me know what you think about Ignatius. Like videocrew said, if you have even a shred of humor, and being British (Doug?) why wouldn't you, expect to chortle uncontrollably.
