His two great collaborations with Mirella Freni and Herbert von Karajan on Puccini's 'La Boheme' and 'Madama Butterfly' for Decca will take some beating, the former with the Berlin Phil and the latter with the Vienna Phil.

I will buy these, thank you, Graham.

Wing,

Agree with Graham recommendations, and in addition would recommend Pav's recordings of Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor and Bellini's I Puritani (where he repeatedly hits above high-D), both with Joan Sutherland.

Two more controversial recordings but personal favorites are Donizetti's L'elisir d'Amore with Kathleen Battle (Levine conducting on DG) and Verdi's Aida with Maria Chiara (Maazel conducting, on Decca).

Best regards,

EJ

Agree. The Lucia is absolutely stellar, Pavarotti at his best.

Turandot on Decca, 1973 I think, again with Joan Sutherland, Monserrat Caballe, Peter Pears and others. The best Turandot 'modern' recording. Available s/h on LP box if you look patiently.

Beyonf the classical repertoire, I also like his LP of Neapolitan songs, also from the '70s when his voice was simply superb, 'O Sole Mio'.
