Naim speakers in otherwise non-Naim systems?

Most of us here are pretty evangelical about Naim amplification; we like what it does – it communicates music in a very special, exciting and enthralling fashion. Some of us are similarly enthusiastic about the CD players, mostly for the same reasons. The consensus (or lack of) on Naim speakers seems to me to be a little different though? Some would look at nothing else while others consider them inferior to the alternatives. I lived with SBLs for several years following on from a well-loved pair of Linn Kans. However, it finally dawned on me that, good though the SBLs were, they needed hugely well-recorded source material to sound at their best (they are ruthlessly revealing) and other speakers, whilst equally revealing, were more tolerant of poor CDs, presenting the material in the best possible light. I also found them bass light, albeit dry and accurate. Their rather cold, clinical presentation also left a bit to be desired. There have been several threads where advocates and detractors have vigorously debated these characteristics over the months.
I was pondering this the other day when it occurred to me that while several of us use Naim amps and/or CD players in non-Naim systems, I had no idea whatsoever how many of us (if any) use Naim speakers in otherwise non-Naim systems? If the truth be told, a major factor in my purchase of SBLs was the knowledge that they would be joining a CDP and amp from the same manufacturer – symbiosis rules? So, how many of you out there are using Naim speakers in isolation? Perhaps the proof of the pudding is in the eating? Dare any of us use them without Naim amps and/or CDPs? If not, why not if they are as equally capable as their cousins in the range? I suspect practically noone uses Naim speakers without some other Naim kit somewhere in front. Care to prove me wrong?
Just curious,
Steve

Well, I heard some DBLs driven by FM Acoustics gear. Definitely not my taste (the owner loves it though) ... smooth for him, but very aggressive and painful on the ears for me and most ...

Well Steve, I have an Arcam Alpha 9 CD, Myryad MI120 Integrated and Naim Credos!
I chose Credos as an upgrade from Royd Minstrels, where a change of electronics would not rid the mostly excellent Royds of a slightly splashy treble and resolution just-not-quite-good-enough.
Upgrades happen in stages as you know, and I do plan to dem 112/150 & CD5 properly, once funds are available! Who knows, I might be a real Naimie one day?

!!! There's always money somewhere for the next upgrade... !!!

Looks like you may have been right then. Am I the only forum member in the world that fits into the "Naim-speakers, everything else from Woolworths" category?
That's life I s'pose...

Looks like you might be right Linds?...although I've yet to get Arcam from Woolworths. The nearest I came was a few years ago when a mate brought 'round his alpha CDP and slotted it in alongside my CDI - bloody hell! It was good for the money: about 300 quid IIRC.
I'm sure the Credos are super (although I've never heard them). I adored my SBLs for years before their idiosyncrasies got me. Further, they're a superb s/h buy at the price they fetch (I sold mine for £550), idiosyncrasies or not. I just thought it seemed very uncommon for people to use Naim speakers in non-Naim systems given what I've observed here over many, many months.

Runs SBLs with a DNM system. Personally I wouldn't use SBLs with any system (not my favourite speaker by a long chalk) but his use of the SBLs with biamped PA3^S (a candidate for best power amp under £5k IMHO, and certainly way better than anything else I've heard) is interesting. Don't personally know him, though, this information coming from chatting to my dealer.

Interesting topic. I have credos, now in an all Naim system, but this was not always the case. The Credos were my first Naim buy, and were bought to match Audiolab pre/power and a Marantz CD17. I had this setup for 2 years before moving to an all Naim system. The Credos sounded great with the Audiolab gear and I was a happy bunny, until my dealer pursuaded me to listen to a cdx....

Yes, I'm one of those weirdos! Rega P3+Elys / Sony SACD / Linn Kolektor/LK85 into Intro 2s (with NACA5). Didn't audition the Sony CDP first, and although it was inexpensive something a little with a bit more weight is called for. Love the Intros openness, resolution and dynamics.

Linn amp/Naim speakers does sound odd I agree, but not in the sonic sense I reckon. I guess it all came about because of the piecemeal way I've acquired things. Didn't like the Nait5 against the Linns, but did like the Intros against various other speakers. Am thinking maybe a Rega Planet or Jupiter would do the job for CDs, but will no doubt give the CD5 and Linn Genki a try too, along with Arcam FMJ CD23. Then again maybe should wait until SACD or DVD-Audio take off...
