remain for me the pinnacles of progressive rock music.
Four great albums no prog-rock collection is complete without. It obviously became fashionable to knock these bands in 77 during the punk years, but I never felt that the aim of new wave music was to remove the superb entertainment provided by ELP et al, but more to rid us from the mid-70s AOR of Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles et al that dominated the airwaves and elevators at the time.
Of course, it is all opinion, but even John Lydon now confesses to being a big Emo fan.

BTW zappadaddy thanks for re-intoducing a prog-rock thread to the forum - so much more interesting to debate music than read another instalment of What DAC: (little bit of controversy creeping in there).
BTW what's your favourite Frank Zappa album?

No arguments from on suggestions so far (not heard that No Man album though). Quite like 2112 as well (side 1)

Another one I wouldn't like to be without in ye olde prog-rock collection.

I have: great album
Manfred's Mann Earth Band did the seemingly impossible by recording Blinded By The Light and making Bruce Springsteen palatable to the sensitive man and woman too (John Peel quote).

Porcupine Tree 'In Absentia' would be my choice for clarity of recording, as well as very fine music.
I use 'Trains' from this as one of my principal demo tracks when demonstrating new equipment.

Yes 'Close to the Edge' would be my choice for a clear recording of 70's prog, again a wonderful album.
VDGG 'Pawn Hearts' would be my choice artistically, but the clarity of recroding is not as good as Yes. Some of the Jethro Tull albums are beautifully recorded too.

I think those early Marillion albums were very well recorded.

Off topic slightly, but local Northampton singer/guitarist/songwriter Katie Malko offered me a similarly new experience by performing a fine acoustic version of 'Dancing In The Dark' - far better than the original!

Have you heard any Delia Derbyshire music from the 60s - I think you'd really like it, but I could be wrong.

Are there any samples on the Web - we can listen too? Thanks, Rotf

30th Anniversary CD re-recorded in 24 bit hd.
Several quid from a shop, or free from the kindly old boy next door who got it with the Mail on Sunday and didn't know what it was.
I'd love to post ELP on this list. My fave Prog. But the recordings are just terrible.

Listened to my recently acquired BSS and it is pretty awful, do these "engineers" actually listen to what they produce. Thank the lord I have it on vinyl.

Not only a great LP, but beautifully recorded - sounds terrific..

This was a nice recording. I give another vote for Close to the Edge. I just picked up the MFSL version which is special.
Although very popular - I am not a huge fan - this one sounds good to me...

And this was a favorite in younger days
