Franz Ferdinand

I bought the above self titled album on a whim ans think it is the best debut release so far this year. It's a bit retro in an early 80's indie kind of way but has some really interesting melodies which set it apart.

I've got this on order (should arrive this week). I liked what I heard on listening posts and it's been universally well reviewed. (well the 4 reviews I've read anyway).

This is one of those albums that I just liked the look of; I am sure I had heard a few bits of theirs but wasn't certain. The stylish design of the cover also caught the eye, it just said buy me! This has happened to me a few times and I have never been dissapointed.

It's funny that, isn't it? The odd dog I happen to buy [be quiet Nick Lees] usually happens because either a] it has a couple of good singles on it and I foolishly think that these might be representative, or b] some magazine has raved about it purely because things were a bit slack and you've got to enthuse people somehow. I've got wise to this now, so haven't bought the Holly Valance album and I've given up on the mags.

Some of the stalwarts of my collection have been bought purely on the strength of that certain frisson from the packaging and a psychic something, which if one had them to hand in HMV, voles' entrails would undoubtedly bear out. Global Communication's 76:14 [digipack... enigmatic! So enigmatic in fact, that for years I just called it 'The Ear' and filed it under E for that and.. ahem.. other reasons], Anja Garbarek [ooh! lovely box..], Puressence [nice rusty ship], Spiritualized [luminous] etc. etc.
