Long Interconnects

Posted by: Harris V on 04 March 2003

I want to connect my DVD player directly into my Nait. I need a run of cable around 5m and so far have been offered a 5m long Chord Chrysalis (£57), Kimber PBJ (too expensive for me) and one from an TV/AV shop that costs 30 quid.

I am also considering making my own (I'm OK at soldering) if I can find some standard Naim stuff (will Naim sell it to me?).

I am worried because the cable has to be routed very close to mains cables and behind the TV. I have had interference problems in the past. Has anyone got any experience/recommendations? Will any of the above be unsuitable or sound terrible?

I use a 4m Chord Chrysalis in my system, originally into an 82 and now into my Chord amp. It does the job reasonably well. Chord Chrysalis is as close as it gets to Naim's own interconnect if you want to maintain that interface. I run the cable past the mains 6-way MusicWorks block and cheapo 4-way block that I use for the TiVo, VCR and TV. The only time I have breakthrough is when I switch off the TV, and this seems to be only when the TV is connected to the cable so I think there is a residual current in the TV that is sending a signal down the wire.

If you're concerned about the distance, one of the best interconnects to use is Chord Chameleon (now in Silver Plus guise). It's £95 for the first metre, but then it's about £10/m after that. This cable was originally designed to be used in high noise, long length environments such as as a microphone lead in a recording studio. It can happily go to 10 metres with no problems whatsoever (a friend of mine uses one of these for inter-room connection). That said, 5m is not too long a cable, so you shouldn't worry about that.

See thread " Cheap interconnects/gold dins" there are a couple of cheaper good alternatives IMHO.
